George E. “Soapy” Showalter, Jr., 91 of Richwood passed away peacefully on Wednesday March 6,2024 with his loving wife by his side. George originally hails from Lexington, KY and was born May 16, 1932. George or “Soapy” as he was affectionately known was a man of exceptional qualities. He possessed a great sense of humor, and his infectious smile could brighten anyone’s day. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and uncle cherishing the moments he spent with his family.

George graduated from the University of Kentucky and served 4 years in the U.S. Navy in submarines. Following his military service, George got a job with Proctor and Gamble and spent the next 30 years with them. After retirement he substituted at North Union for 16 years and was also on Richwood Council for many years when he passed.

George’s fondest memories were the Bluegill Tournaments he held each year on the first Saturday of June for the little kids. George’s hobbies were fishing, which reflected his love for life, and working in the yard.

Korean War era and Cold War Submarine Veteran. RMCS(SS) Morris Spencer “Spence” Newkirk departed on Eternal Patrol on 04 February 2024 in Honefoss Norway. Spence was a long term resident of Norway.

Spence was born in New York, NY February 19 1933. He grew up in New Jersey on his grandparents´ farm along with younger brother Bill. His parents divorced early, and the mother remarried Marvin Van Vorst («Van») who was in the Navy. After WWII Van was transferred to Hawaii, then later to Japan. Spence spent his teens in these two places.

Spence joined the Navy at age 18 in 1951 and spent several years on surface ships before volunteering for Submarine Duty. His first Submarine was USS SABLEFISH (SS 303) where he Qualified in Submarines in 1954. Other assignments included USS TORO (SS 422), USS PIPER (SS 409), USS GROUPER (AGSS 214), USS NAUTILUS (SSN 571), USS HARDHEAD (SS 365), USS GAR (SS 206) and USS JALLAO (SS 368). He also served on Shore Duty at NATO Headquarters in Oslo Norway in the 1960s and in Naples where he retired in 1979 as an RMCS(SS).

After retirement he moved to Norway. After a short time he was offered the job as bar manager of the Officer´s Club at the same Nato base he was stationed at in the 60´s, and being bored, he accepted. Here he stayed for about 14 years, until the base relocated to Stavanger and he retired for good.

He met Gunn Eidsgaard in the early 80´s, and they were married in 1992. They built their home at a small community about half hour from the HQ where he worked.

He joined USSVI Groton Base in April 1998 as a Life Member and was inducted into the prestigious Holland Club in 2005.

Spence enjoyed traveling around attending various reunions. He was a very colorful person who made friends all over. He would swing his tankard with Russians, Germans and Brits alike at the International reunions that he and Gunn went to. All these reunions gave him great pleasure!

Spence suffered a brain hemorrhage in March 2010. Two years later he suffered a very serious heart condition, which undid almost all the good work he and the physical therapist had done after the stroke. His mind remained sharp, it was strictly the body that suffered.

Robert Edmun Conboy , EN2(SS)    December 21, 2023

Robert “Bob” Conboy was born in Providence, Rhode Island on April 15, 1932.

Growing up Bob was always fascinated with water and ships, and as a youth, he hung around a shipyard along the Providence River. Built during World War II as part of the country’s Emergency Shipbuilding Program, it provided a perfect place for Bob to watch and learn from the workers. So much so that once Bob graduated from high school, he joined the Naval Reserves.

Bob thrived in the reserves. It was a keen interest and a desire to do something important, something patriotic, which drove his decision; it brought pride, satisfaction, camaraderie and, frankly, income in those tough times. Bob was swept into active duty when Truman called up reserves in June of 1950 as the U.S. engaged in the Korean War.

Bob’s true love was for submarines, and he worked hard to realize that special assignment after successfully completing the competitive Sub School. He served on the USS Jallao, and his favorite, the USS TIRU, a GUPPY submarine. Bob earned the rank E5 Petty Officer 2nd Class and was a proud Holland Member, being qualified in submarines for 70 years. He earned the National Defense, China, Korea, and United Nations service medals. Bob’s deployments took him to Yokosuka, Japan and other areas of the world, which fueled his love for travel and meeting people which continued the rest of his life.

After his honorable discharge in 1954, Bob returned to Providence where he went to work as a machinist at Universal Winding. Bob met his future wife and co-worker, Elena Pezzuco. She fell in love with the handsome young man with the genial smile and the gift of the Irish blarney. With their parents’ blessings, they married in 1956; Bob and Elena enjoyed a beautiful life of 67 years in happy marriage, together raising three children.

After their honeymoon, Bob went to night school to earn his Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting, and received his degree from Byrant College. Soon after, he accepted a job offer from an up-and-coming company called Xerox. Bob traveled the globe to recruit top scientists and researchers to join the team and perfect the technology which helped make the Xerox name ubiquitous.

In the late 1970s, Bob moved his family to Seal Beach, California as his role with Xerox continued to expand. His sailboat, Blarney, also made the move to a new berth in Long Beach and Bob continued to enjoy sailing in the Pacific. After retiring early, Bob and Elena boarded their trawler and spent the next three years exploring the Intercostal Waterway from Brownsville, Texas, along the Gulf Coast, around Key West Florida, up the Atlantic Seaboard, through the Great Lakes, and down the Mississippi River. They revisited family and made new friends, and Bob later often said that this cruise was his dream come true.

After returning to Seal Beach, Bob decided it was time to put up his last boat. He became an active member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans (USSVI) and volunteered his time as a docent aboard the U.S.S. Iowa battleship in San Pedro, CA, where you could find Bob chatting with colleagues and guests, sharing stories about Navy ships and the sea; Bob was happiest aboard — it was evident in his smile and stance.

Bob was an avid sailor, pilot, saxophonist, scuba diver, skier, wood worker, and fan of TV westerns, and most of all, he was a devoted husband and father of three. Bob was a beautiful man — smart, curious, helpful, brave, honest, fair, and loving.

Qualified in submarines on the USS Tusk (SS-426) in 1956 and was a LCDR when he left the Navy.

Ralph R. Lachance, 90, of Vero Beach, Florida passed away on October 31, 2023. He was born in Lewiston, Maine on November 10, 1932 to Joseph and Clementine Lachance. He had been a resident of Maine for many years, before moving to Florida in the 1980’s. Ralph graduated from Lewiston High School in 1951, and enlisted in the Navy after graduation retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was married to Elaine Y. Whitehouse, the love of his life, until she passed in 1978. In 1980, he was fortunate to meet his 2nd great love, Patricia G. Tifft, who remained his life-long companion until his passing.
Ralph loved his time in the Navy, often reflecting on the many friends/shipmates and adventures from those days. He loved his family and friends, and time spent at Mousam Lake in Shapleigh, Maine. He had a life-long interest in motorcycles, especially Harleys, loved to dance, was an avid tennis player, and enjoyed watching football with family. He could take apart, fix, and build most anything, and was always willing to lend a hand with any project. We have no doubt he is busy fixing something in heaven.

Ronald Vincent Caminati Sr , IC3(SS) October 31, 2023

Cold War Submarine Veteran, Ronald Vincent Caminati Sr., age 82, passed away peacefully in the early morning of October 31, 2023.
Ron was born on July 3, 1941 to Dorothy Champion (Kirtland) Caminati and Gedio Augistine Caminati. He grew up in Chester CT where he swam the length of Cedar Lake in the summers, went fishing and played baseball.
He joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1959-1963, all 6’4” of him on the submarine USS Jallao. He was an electrician by trade a proud member of the IBEW Local 90. He spent some great years working at Connecticut Yankee Nuclear Power Plant with local 457 as well as at Millstone Nuclear Power Plant and Wallingford Gas Power before retiring.
Ron loved the outdoors: hunting, deep sea fishing and working on the farm and house, as well as stock car racing and long drives. He loved listening to music and watching the Yankees. He had a quiet wit and enjoyed sharing a laugh with friends, coworkers and neighbors.
Ron leaves behind his beloved wife of 62 years Georgiana (Maly) Caminati. They met when they were 16, and were married on February 11, 1961.

Frank C. Cherry, age 93 of Stewart, TN, passed away Sunday, August 27, 2023 at Alive Hospice in Nashville, TN. Frank entered this life on November 5, 1929 in Dover, TN, son to the late W.E. and
Mae Bush Cherry.

Frank proudly served his country in the United States Navy where he retired after 20 years of service. Following his military service, he joined the local Steamfitters and Pipefitters Union. Frank later retired from TVA, and was a member of both the Disabled American Veterans and American Legionhe was also a faithful member of McKinnon United Methodist Church.

Qualified in submarines on the USS Segundo (SS-398) in 1948 and was a EN1(SS) when he left the Navy.

Qualified in submarines on the USS Sam Houston (SSBN-609) in 1971 and was a YNCS(SS) when he left the Navy.
Howard’s career started after graduation from Boot Camp in 1966 when he was assigned to NAMS School and learned how to drive an LCVP for landing troops. Little did he know that was the beginning of a cruise half way around the globe to Viet Nam. He reenlisted in the Philippines for Yeoman School and upon graduation was stationed at Great Lakes, IL When Howard’s tour ended, he was able to live his childhood dream of becoming a Submariner and was transferred to the USS SAM HOUSTON (SSBN 609) where he Qualified in Submarines in 1971. It was a great experience and an opportunity to learn the job of a Submarine Yeoman. Additional assignments were onboard USS JALLAO (SS 368)USS CLAMAGORE (SS 343); NR1; USS INDIANAPOLIS (SSN 697); USS BILLFISH (SSN 676); the first and finest, USS NAUTILUS (SSN 571) and USS FULTON (AS 11) where he retired from the Navy in 1987 as a YNCS(SS).

Shipmate Kligge joined SUBVETS Groton Base as a Life Member in November 2004, and was inducted to the prestigious HOLLAND CLUB in 2021.  When he was inducted into the Holland Club Howard recalled that “what he learned throughout his career was a good work ethic, comradeship, and trust. Unlike surface craft, the submarine crew is very tight and needs to really trust their shipmates because their life depends on it.” This is a valuable lesson that we all learned.

Zachariah R Hallock, ETR2(SS) July 17, 2023

Cold War Submarine Veteran, Zachariah Ralph Hallock, June 27, 1942 – July 17, 2023,  was born in Eastern L.I., NY, the 11th Zachariah Hallock in his clan, with 18 1st cousins. He served in the Navy, most as an electronic technician on the U.S.S. Diablo, a submarine.
After Naval service, Zack and Judi (Nagle) began their 47-year marriage, starting at Brooklyn Polytechnic (NYU). He earned his B.S. in Physics, then graduate degrees in Physical Oceanography at the U. of Miami’s Rosenstiel School, all in the 1970s.
Zack family moved to Long Beach, which they loved for 25 years. He joined the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office at the Stennis Space Center. There, he planned and conducted surveys in areas of Naval interest. In 1981, he transferred within Stennis to the Oceanography Div. of the Naval Research Lab. (NRL, then NORDA).
Zack retired from the NRL and moved to Efland, NC, in 2004. After retirement, he continued his research as an NRL contractor, productive until the end of his life. He published 30+ research papers in scientific journals. Dr. Hallock was a Member of the American Geophysical Union and Sigma Xi and was internationally recognized in the field of Physical Oceanography. He was a student of Zen Buddhism and Tai Chi practitioner.
His 1st wife Judi died in 2013. He remarried a close family friend, Mary Greene, in 2016, who with his adult children was at his side when he died. He had been diagnosed with MDS and then AML just 5 months earlier. Zack was a character who wore his pig-manure-covered boots on research cruises, to the chagrin of his shipmatesresisted and never owned a smartphone; and once paid over $5 for a cup of tea in Yokosuka, Japan, in the 1990s, which he was never allowed to forget.

George Satterthwaite LT July 5, 2023

Cold War Submarine Veteran, Francis George Satterthwaite was born to Marion Bloch Satterthwaite and Edward Jovito Satterthwaite on November 26, 1936, in San Francisco, CA. He died on July 5, 2023, in Pacific Grove, CA. George had a long and illustrious life. George and his family moved to Annapolis, MD when he was ten. After graduating from St. Mary’s High School, he went to Fordham University where he received a B. A. in Physics. He married Judith Simpson while at Fordham and his daughter Kimberly was born on the day he graduated. There would follow three more children with Judith: Jory, Penny and Ted. After graduation, George joined the Navy and had over 40 years of both active and inactive service. He served on the USS Benham and the USS Jallao, trained as a submariner, taught at the US Naval Academy and earned a Master’s Degree in Mathematics. He left the Navy after seven years to pursue a civilian career at The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory and at Nuclear Utilities Services. While working on his Phd. in Public Administration at American University he began consulting with the Model Cities Program. He formed his own consulting firm and married Mary Jo McDonough with whom he had two sons – Daniel and James.After finishing his Phd. George took the family to Newport, RI, to teach at The Naval War College as a civilian, although he remained active in the Naval Reserves attaining the rank of Captain. After four years, he was offered a job at the Monterey Institute of International Studies which he could not refuse, returning to the state of his birth. Soon, amazingly, he was offered the opportunity to go back on active duty. Captain Satterthwaite served fourteen years in Washington, DC, in India and then in Indonesia as the Naval Attache in the US Embassy, and in Peru as the Defense Attache. Many accomplishments in those positions, and many adventures. He wrote a book about this which is still used in attache training.When Captain Satterthwaite fully retired from the Navy he moved the family back to California where he taught at the Naval Postgraduate School. He continued teaching after full retirement, as a substitute and tutor at the Carmel Middle School and Monterey High School. George loved teaching almost as much as he loved the Navy.

Korean War era Submarine Veteran, Clarence Orndorff, 93, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
Born August 28, 1929, he was the son of the late Maurice and Irene (Wivell) Orndorff.
Clarence served in the US Navy (1950-1954) in the submarine service during the Korean War.
He is retired from Mt. St. Mary’s College.
Clarence was a great cook and loved outdoor barbequing. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, gardening, playing the harmonica, and family functions.
He was a lifetime member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, and at Vigilant Hose Company.
Clarence also belonged to VFW Post 6658, American Legion Francis X, Elder Post 121, Amvets, and various local social clubs, and fish and game clubs.

Richard Frederick “Dick” Hartfelder, age 89 of Springville, TN, died Friday, April 28, 2023, at the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Humboldt, TN.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, retiring as Lt. Commander.  He served on the first nuclear powered USS Nautilus SSN-571.  Dick was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus #7086, and the Holy Cross Catholic Assembly Knights of Columbus 2673.  He was a realtor for Town & Country Realty in Camden for several years.

Cold War Submarine Veteran, Bruce Allan Tenny, 77, formerly of Brevard went to be with the Lord on April 28, 2023.
Bruce was born in Rochester NY to Robert & Elizabeth Tenny. He attended RL Thomas High School graduating in 1963.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years Pat, son Jason brothers Steve and Paul Tenny of Rochester NY, and granddaughters Peyton & Madeline.
After graduation he joined the Navy and attended submarine school and served on the USS Jallao till 1968.
He worked many years in retail retiring in 2011 & moved to Brevard. For the last 11 years he attended Brevard Wesleyan Church where he sang in the church choir and was part of several Men’s bible groups.

Gasper “Cappy” Kuhn RM3(SS) March 9, 2023

Gasper F. “Cappy” Kuhn departed this life on March 9, 2023 at the age of 87 following a long illness. Cappy was born in Bridgeport, CT on February 8, 1936. He attended St. Stephens elementary school and graduated from Bassick High School in 1953. Immediately following graduation, Cappy proudly served four years in the United States Navy as a radioman on two different submarines- the USS Tigrone and the USS Jallao, traveling from the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal to South Africa and Brazil before returning to port in New London, CT.
After leaving the Navy, Cappy worked as an auto mechanic at Fairport Gulf. During this time, he met his future wife, Barbara Billings and they were married in 1966 at St. Patrick’s Church in Bridgeport. Barbara and Cappy welcomed two children, Alex and Gretchen.
Cappy later worked in the insurance industry, first at the Home Insurance Company, followed by a long career with The Hartford. After several failed attempts at retirement, Cappy finally succeeded in 2013 and retired for good.
Cappy enjoyed amateur radio, watching the boats at the marina, feeding wild birds, the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, and the New York Giants, American Idol, talking about politics and being a suitable chair for the cats. He also cherished spending time with his children- flying as a passenger all over the country with Alex at the helm, and trips to New York City and long bike rides with Gretchen. Cappy was known and loved by all, for his good nature, incredible wit, and wicked sense of humor.

Domenic “Dom” Iammarino MM3(SS) January 30, 2023

Domenic A. Iammarino was born on August 14th, 1952 in Cleveland, Ohio. He grew up in the Little Italy area of Cleveland, and attended Murray Hill Elementary School, St. Philomena School, St. Joe’s High School, and Indiana University. Domenic was a hard worker and Mr. Fix-it from an early age. One of his first jobs was at the corner Sunoco gas station so he could fix up his 1957 Chevy Bel Air. He also worked as a clerk for Fisher Fazio Costa, which led to his passion for food sales later in life. He enlisted as a Navy Reservist while in high school, and served 2 years on active duty after graduating. He was a submariner (Machinist Mate Auxiliary) on the U.S.S. Bang and U.S.S. Jallao. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he worked many different jobs, most notably in food sales at General Foods, Borden, The Dial Corporation, as well as in sales at KeyBank, 1-800 Radiator, and Renewal by Anderson. He retired in 2020. He spent his last years doing home projects, copying all the family home movies, playing with his chocolate lab, Amber, and visiting and loving all his kids and grandkids across the country.

Domenic was a man who truly believed in relationships. He could strike up a conversation with anyone, and quickly make them his friend. Domenic’s passions in life included time with his family, all his dogs, good food, capturing family memories on video, Frank Sinatra or Nat King Cole, learning about his Italian family heritage, playing pool, all things Christmas related, and teaching his kids how to fix things. He will be greatly missed, and we ask that you remember him anytime you hear a Christmas carol or a Big Band song, drink a Pepsi, or need something repaired in your home.

Darrell D. Best, 80, of Brooksville, Fla., formerly of Gales Ferry, passed away at home Dec. 22, 2022. Darrell was born Aug. 1, 1942, in Albion, Ill., to Helen Ruth (Hess) Best and Lowell E. Best, the oldest of 11 children.

Darrell was married to Nancy (White) Best in June 1970, in Newport, R.I., and was married for 28 years until her death in 1999.

Darrell was a 20-year veteran of the U.S . Navy (Retired ENCS) and considered himself a lifelong submariner. He served on the USS Peregrine, USS Frigate Bird, USS Gilmore, and the USS Jallao. He also taught at the USN Submarine School in Groton. After retirement, he spent many years working for SUPSHIP Groton.

Darrell had many talents, he was a great cook and enjoyed grilling and using the smoker. He enjoyed working on cars and anything mechanical. He was an avid reader and always had a book going. Tom Clancy was one of his favorite authors.

MAGOS, Robert Donald, 98, died December 14, 2022. Robert was born to Peter and Celia Magos in Hamilton, OH October 28, 1924. His high school years were spent in Hamilton, where he played football. When Pearl Harbor was attacked, he left school and joined the Navy in 1942. He served in the Pacific area and was a torpedoman on the submarines USS Pipefish (SS-388). He was based in Pearl Harbor, HI. Bob was discharged in 1946. After Bob left the Navy, he moved to Warren, OH where he built a small racecar and was in construction. Bob worked for General Motors and became a general foreman of maintenance and construction until he retired in 1983. An avid hunter, fisherman, and traveler, he moved to West Virginia where he bought a parcel of wooded land and built a 2-story house, doing almost all of the work himself. After several years he and his wife Mary moved and settled in Grand Junction, CO. They were married 32 years. He was a member of many groups: The Royal Arch Mason’s 32nd degree Scottish Rite, Knights Templar, as well as being active in the Arabian Band, Western Colorado Shrine Club (2011 Shriner of the year) and was part of the Clowns and El Jebel Temple. He was an avid member of World War II Submarine Veterans, Regional Director of Southwest Colorado Submarine Veterans. He was also a member of the VFW and NRA. Bob was also very active member of Holy Wisdom Orthodox Mission Church in Grand Junction, CO.

Douglas Almon Bryant, , ENCS(SS), USN, Ret., 96, of Middleton, MA died peacefully while surrounded by his loving family on November 10, 2022. Born in Newburyport on August 23, 1926, he later resided in Madison, New Hampshire, where he joined the Navy in 1943 and served on the Submarine USS Sea Dog (SS-401) during World War II. He qualified in submarines on Sea Dog in 1944. He also served on the submarines USS Spinax, USS Sea Owl, USS Entemedor and USS Crevale after World War II. Doug was also qualified as a First-Class Navy Deep Sea Diver and a qualified Scuba Diver and served a tour of duty at the Submarine Escape Training Tank at the Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut, where he taught submarine escape and scuba diving. His last tour of duty was on the submarine USS Sea Dog (the same submarine he served on during WWII), as USNR Submarine Division I-II Station Ship at the Naval Reserve Training Center, Derby Wharf, Salem, MAwhere he was an instructor for Submarine Naval Reserve Personnel. Doug was a veteran of World War II, Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He also participated in secret submarine patrols during the Cold War. Doug retired from the US Navy in 1967 with the rank of Senior Chief Engineman (E8) with over 24 years of service to his country. After his Naval service, Doug was employed at several companies, including Varian Associates of Beverly and at Danvers State Hospital (Hogan Regional Center) where he worked at the Power Plant as a High-Pressure Boiler Operator from which he retired in 1998. Doug was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W, The Fleet Reserve Association and a life member of both Submarine Veterans of World War II and US Submarine Veterans Inc.

Carrol A. Tille, 83, of Quincy, MI, formerly of Defiance, OH, passed away Monday, October 31, 2022, at Drew’s Place of Coldwater.

Carrol was born June 22, 1939, in Mount Vernon, OH, to Amos and Anna Ruth (Denman) Tille. He served in the US Navy on the submarine USS Jallao. Carrol married Mary Ann Zimmerman on April 4, 1964, in Defiance, OH. Mr. Tille served as an Ohio State Trooper for 28 years, retiring in 1989. After his retirement Carrol served as an investigator for the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. He was also a special deputy for the Defiance Co. Sheriff’s Department.

Carrol was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Defiance, OH, and attended St. Charles Borromeo Church in Coldwater, MI. He also belonged to the Defiance Fish and Game Club, the Elks and the Ohio Troopers Association. Carrol enjoyed watching western movies, snowmobiling, and scuba diving. He also loved living on the lake and enjoying a Bud Light with his buddies. What he treasured most was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and grand dogs.

Jimmie Gray enlisted in the Navy in 1952 and was designated an Engineman.  He served on USS Blenny (SS-324), USS Jallao (SS-368) and USS Sea Dragon (SSN-584). He left Sea Dragon in 1961 as an EN1(SS).  He was commissioned and later reported to USS Chivo in 1964.  He finished his tour on Chivo in 1966 as a LT.  Jimmie retired from the Navy in 1972 as a LCDR.

William “Billy” G. Dargavel, age 79 passed away on Monday July 18, 2022 at his home. He was born to Ann Marie Gallagher and James S. “Scotty” Dargavel on July 26, 1942 in Buffalo, New York.

He joined the Navy and served in the submarine service before the Vietnam War. He volunteered for the Mobile Riverine Force during Vietnam. He was injured while serving and was honorably discharged from the Navy as a Decorated War Hero with 4 bronze stars, Purple Heart, Combat action Ribbon, Navy Commendation Medal with combat “V”, Navy Achievement Medal, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation. He later moved to Telluride, Colorado in the 1980’s, and later settled in Vernal, Utah.

He was a successful Plumber, and loved the outdoors.

Donald Smith Edwards, CT3(SS) June 1, 2022

Donald Smith Edwards passed away peacefully in Tarpon Springs, Florida on June 1, 2022.  Donnie was born on September 8, 1937 to E. Perry and Dorothy Baker Edwards. He and his siblings David, Deanna, and Judy grew up in the Old Homestead on Hedge Street overlooking West Harbor.

Upon completion of his schooling at the Fishers Island School (Old School), Donnie joined the Navy in 1956. He was a Cryptological Technician Seaman on the USS Balao (SS-285) Submarine and truly enjoyed serving his country. During Donnie’s service, he earned the submariner warfare badge aka “Dolphins” that he was most proud of. His last Naval duty assignment was in Karamursel, Turkey in 1960. When not out at sea, he was a member of the Navy’s bowling team and twice bowled a 299 – just one more pin Donnie.

After leaving the Navy, Donnie returned to Fishers Island and raised three children with Laura Woodford Edwards. He was an electrician by trade and worked primarily for Gada Contracting and the Fishers Island Utility Company. After leaving Fishers Island, he was the engineer on the Entrepreneur, a luxury cruise ship out of New York City and Florida. Donnie then settled in Florida where he worked for the Innisbrook Golf Club and Pinellis County until he retired.  During this time in Tarpon Springs, Donnie met his wife of 20 years, Gladys Powers Edwards.

Volunteering and donating his time were a large part of Donnie’s life.  He was a Life Member of the Fishers Island Fire Department and achieved the rank of First Assistant Chief. Donnie was also a member of the first class of NYS certified EMTs on Fishers Island. He served as a member of the Fishers Island School Board during the construction of the current school.  While in Florida, he was very involved in the Special Olympics.

Besides bowling, some of Donnie’s favorite activities were fishing, hunting, and golfing. Any time he returned to Fishers, he would roll rocks for crabs and go black fishing (tautog). He was very proud of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. Dad’s constant smile will be truly missed but the memories of good times will live on with so many of us.

Chester Rogers, 96, of Manchester NH, Rutland VT, and Weare, NH, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 31, 2022. Born in Candia, NH on February 6, 1926, he was the son of Harold and Florence (McFarland) Rogers. However, due to family hardships, Chet spent the majority of his formative years under the care of Daniel Frye Tillotson and Miss Abbey French.

After attending Manchester Central High School, Chet enlisted in the Navy. During WWII, he served onboard the submarine USS Devilfish that conducted wartime patrols along the Japanese coast and throughout the western Pacific Ocean. Chet manned the submarine’s deck guns during surface operations and survived a kamikaze attack during his last patrol. After the war, Chet married his longtime sweetheart, Doris Freese. They celebrated seventy-five years of marriage in February.

Chet then attended and graduated from Hesser Business College and began a successful career in Kemper Insurance which culminated in being named regional Insurance Claims Manager at both Rutland and Manchester Offices. In his leisure time, Chet loved gardening, crazy family Christmas gatherings, woodworking, and playing golf with his best friends Duke, Harry and Stan.

Ed Paul was an inveterate story teller. His sudden death on May 13, 2022 would have undoubtedly found a place in the book that he left incomplete on his computer. Fortunately, Ed’s stories were oft-repeated at family gatherings and his wife Margie Jesswein Paul, children Lisa (Frank) Emanuel (deceased), Daniel Paul, sister Joanne Fishel, grandsons Michael (Amber), Nick and Tanner Emanuel, cousin John (Peggy) Paul, and numerous in-laws, nephews, nieces, and friends will contribute “Uncle Ed stories” to the family gatherings for generations to come. Perhaps one of them will finish his book. Edwin Ray Paul born 11/27/1938 in Pendleton, Washington. His parents, Alba and Marie (Doolin) Paul, moved their family around the Pacific Northwest. His father was first and foremost a preacher, but also supported his family with carpentry. Ed’s career as the “sonar man” on the US Navy Submarine Jallao in his late teens began his lifelong love of the ocean. Ed practiced law in Los Angeles and Orange County. He was a trial lawyer who loved the challenge and discourse of business and real estate litigation for over 50 years. In 1991, Ed hired a young lawyer, Margie Jesswein who soon became his partner in business and life. Ed was devoted to his immediate and extended family. He loved to be near the ocean, travel, explore, read adventure novels, and play chess on line with his son Dan. Although Ed had reduced his workload in the last two years, he remained engaged and connected to his family and friends until the day he passed away. Ed’s family will honor his wishes to spread his ashes at sea.

Cold war submarine veteran Kent Lawrence of Boston and West Boothbay Harbor, Maine, died on March 12, 2022 in Boston from prostate most cancers. He was 86 years previous. Kent was born in Boston, the son of the late Dr. Richard W. and Mary (Peckham) Lawrence. He attended colleges in New England and Washington, and in 1958 graduated from the US Naval Academy at Annapolis. The day after his commencement he married his highschool sweetheart, Erna MacLaughlin of Newport, RI, within the Naval Academy Chapel. Kent and Erna then launched into a facet by facet as he pursued a Navy profession that lasted simply over 20 years. After 4 years in destroyers, the rest of Kent’s Navy assignments, each afloat and ashore, concerned the submarine service. He served in a number of subs, and was commander of an assault submarine within the early Seventies.  After coming back from the Navy in 1980 Kent returned to the Boston space and launched into a monetary providers profession. For a number of years he was a stockbroker with EF Hutton, and have become a Vice President on the Financial institution of Boston. In 1988 he joined Babson-United Funding Advisors as a senior funding counselor, and remained with that agency till his retirement as Vice President in 2003. Only one 12 months later he was identified with aggressive, high-risk prostate most cancers, and determined to dedicate the rest of his life volunteering for advocacy, training, and assist of different sufferers. For his management and repair in these efforts he was awarded by the American Most cancers Society and the Most cancers Hope Community. In retirement Kent was additionally energetic in all kinds of different organizations. An avid genealogist, he recognized eight ancestors who had served our nation’s trigger through the Revolutionary Struggle, and was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. A eager boating fanatic, he began crusing offshore on the age of 15, and stored a ship at his trip house in Maine. Kent is survived by Erna MacLaughlin Lawrence, his beloved spouse and dearest pal with whom he shared virtually 64 years of joyous married life. Erna is retired from a 22-year profession at Deutsche Financial institution/Zurich-Scudder Investments the place she was a Vice President. He additionally leaves a son, Richard M. Lawrence; a daughter, Kimberley L. Byrd; and her husband Christopher M. Byrd. Further survivors embrace 5 grandchildren, his sister, and two nephews.

Frank Lee Hill, 85, of French Lick, Indiana entered into eternal rest on February 2nd, 2022 at IU Health Paoli.

He was born in Ashland, Kentucky on October 7th, 1936 to Emory Ammon and Elizabeth Ruby (Brainard) Hill.

Frank married Anita Jane Bowman on June 19th, 1954 and she preceded him in death on December 24th, 1998.

Frank proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1973 as a Chief Petty Officer and during his 20-year Naval career he served on the USS Spangler destroyer from 1954-1956, USS Angler submarine from 1956-1960,USS Tigrone submarine from 1963-1966, USS Piper submarine from 1966-1967, USS Cobbler submarine in 1967, USS Jallao submarine from 1967-1968, USS Entemedor submarine from 1968-1970, and the USS Carp submarine from 1970-1971 which was the last diesel submarine before they were decommissioned.

Following his retirement from the United States Navy, Frank worked for International Paper where he retired after 20 years.

He was a member of the French Lick American Legion Post 76, Sub Vets (lifetime member), Holland Club (lifetime member) and FRA (lifetime member).

Frank Hill spent his life joking, pranking, and trying to make people smile.  He was the kind of man that entered a room and filled it with his voice, his laughter and his presence.  He never met a stranger and left an unforgettable impression wherever he went. He was a patriot who loved his family, whitewater canoeing, animals, nature and the United States Navy.  Frank never wanted people to fuss over him or to be sad.  He opted for a graveside service because he wanted people to remember his adventurous, vibrant life and not focus on his passing.  The family asks that if you would like to honor Frank, you raise a glass and toast his life and the man he was, plant a tree or a rose bush, donate to your local animal shelter or donate to the American Cancer Society. East Lyme – Charles John Parke, 77, a longtime resident of East Lyme, went to be with his Lord and Savior Feb. 2, 2022, at the Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Buffalo, New York, the son of Charles A. and Anna Parke. He graduated from Iroquois Central High School in Elma, N.Y., where he was raised by Cy Eldridge, because his parents died when Chuck was very young. He attended Thames Valley Tech in Norwich and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served on submarines as an Interior Communication Electrician, where he learned valuable knowledge. Chuck served in the Navy from 1962 to 1968 and served on various boats, USS Jallao (SS-368), USS Entemedor (SS-340) and the USS Tusk (SS-426). Upon leaving the Navy, he continued to work as an electrician, his whole life, including owning his own company, called the Electricians, until his retirement in 2017.

Chuck was a communicant of St. Matthias Church, where he attended many Bible Study groups and was the Building Committee Chairman. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #1173, and served many positions, including Past Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator and Past District Deputy. He was a member of the United States Sub Vets of Pocono Base and the Holland Club (Qualified Submarines for over 50 Years).

Chuck loved to golf with his wife Annette and their friends. He was a member and past president of the East Lyme Business Golf League. He was an avid shooter and was a member of the Niantic Sportsman Club and Eastern CT Skeet League.

Richard Edward Grissom, QM3(SS) January 28, 2022

Richard “Rick” Edward Grissom, 78, also known as “Papa”, “Pepa”, “Rick-o’shay”, or “Gator”, passed away in Kissimmee, Florida on Friday, January 28, 2022. Rick was born on November 27, 1943, to his parents Alice Fletcher Grissom, and B.G. Grissom, in Kissimmee, and was a lifelong resident of Osceola county. He graduated from Osceola High School and continued on at the University of Florida, before enlisting in the Navy in 1963, completing submarine school, and serving on the submarine Jallao.

After leaving the Navy, Rick joined his father, BG Grissom, in their family’s citrus grove business, and also began a career in the real estate appraisal industry, where he became an expert witness in the state of Florida courts.

He began flying in 1968 and discovered his passion for airshows and flight. He was one of the first members of ICAS (International Council of AirShows) and president of ICAS from 1980-1984. ICAS awarded him the Sword of Excellence in 1991, for outstanding service and personal contributions. He was president of Aerial Entertainment Resources, and produced, promoted, or consulted on over 100 major air shows. The Canadian Forces Snowbirds made him a member of the Society of Honorary Snowbirds in recognition of his “unwavering, wholehearted, selfless, and enduring commitment to the team and its mission.” This passion carried him to be inducted into the Airshow Hall of Fame in 2017, which you can watch his Induction by clicking on the link at the end of this obituary.

The airshow industry became a love for his entire family, with his kids and grandkids attending as many shows as they could. His love for entertainment even brought him to be part of producing Disney’s 20th anniversary celebration.

Rick loved being surrounded by his family. He coached many years of Little League baseball, and loved spending time outdoors hunting and fishing. He has continued his support of Gator football, being a Gator Booster for years after his father began the tradition. He never stopped encouraging his kids to chase their passions, enjoy life, question most everything, and definitely not back down from a challenge.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Suzanne, his three children, Clay (Kathy) Grissom, Clint Grissom, Kelley (John) Ranaudo, and his six grandchildren, Brody Grissom, Luke Ranaudo, Landon Grissom, Katie Grissom, Norah Ranaudo, and Kylie Grissom. He is also survived by his sister Linda Grissom.

Qualified in submarines on the USS Bashaw (SS-241) in 1958 and was a CWO4 when he left the Navy.

Alan Thomas Ferdinandsen, age 82, a resident of Foley, AL, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022.

Alan was born in Philadelphia, PA. He moved to Fords, NJ as an infant and remained there until graduating from Woodbridge High School in 1956. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1956, on his 17th birthday. He married his high school sweetheart, Carolann, in 1958. Their first daughter, Nancy, was born in December 1959. Their second daughter, Amy, was born in May 1970.

He proudly served in the Navy until retiring in 1979. He started as an enlisted man and made his way to Chief Warrant Office 4 prior to his retirement. Alan was on the crew of the USS Triton when it circumnavigated the world submerged in 1960. He also served sea duty on the USS Bashaw, USS Scamp, USS Orion, USS Halfbeak and USS Jallao and shore duty at Naval Station Great Lakes, IL and Naval Submarine Base, New London, CT. While on active duty, he earned his Associates Degree from Mohegan Community College and his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of New Haven.

After retiring from the Navy, he continued working for Control Data Corporation and then McLaughlin Research Company. During this time, Alan also completed his Master’s Degree at the University of New Haven. *1 He then served as an adjunct professor for the University of New Haven, conducting both undergraduate and graduate courses   He retired, the second time, in 2001 and moved to Foley, AL the same year.
Alan always gave credit to his wife, Carolann, for his success in home and work. He said that her support and love kept him motivated to do better. He will be remembered fondly as a loving and kind husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend.

Korean War era Submarine Veteran, Hudson became a little less colorful on January 17, 2022 when Stuart Grant Murray, age 99, passed away at Laurel Lake after a brief illness. Murray moved to Hudson 14 years ago to be near family, and made an immediate splash at the retirement community when he showed up in the dining room wearing a bright Hawaiian aloha shirt. Murray’s life-long love of Hawaii was celebrated every day inside Laurel Lake with a festive aloha shirt, and his devotion to aloha shirts is credited with loosening the dress code inside Laurel Lake.

Murray was born May 12, 1922 in Los Angeles, California. He was the eldest child of Admiral Stuart Shadrick Murray (USN) and Madeleine Young Murray, and as a member of a Naval family his childhood was on the go. His first steps were taken on Waikiki Beach in Hawaii and in his formative years he lived in Santa Barbara, California, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, New London, Connecticut and Coronado, California.

Murray joined the Naval Reserves at 17 years of age and went through flight training school before the age of 20. Murray graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree from the United States Naval Academy, Class of 1947, widely considered one of the most influential classes in academy history (Jimmy Carter, President of United States was a classmate). Murray was the heavyweight boxing champion of his brigade at the Naval Academy.

After graduation he circled the globe on a destroyer and then entered Naval Submarine School in New London, CT in 1948. His first submarine assignment was aboard the USS Becuna, and then he returned to school to work on a Master’s Degree where his final thesis was entitled, “Investigation Of The Output Of Clippers To Gaussian Inputs.” The thesis was 60 pages of a formula and he continued to talk in great detail about his work 70 years after it was written.

Wray “Hawkeye” Hawkins, TM2(SS) January 17, 2022

Wray died peacefully at his home on Jan. 17, 2022, on Butter Creek near Echo, Oregon, on the family farm. Wray was born in Pendleton on Aug. 31, 1949. After he graduated from Helix High School in 1968, where he played football and basketball, Wray joined the U.S. Navy where he quickly found his niche in the submarine corps. He truly enjoyed serving his country and being on a submarine was an experience of a lifetime that he spoke of fondly and often. In 1975 Wray was honorably discharged from the Navy and found his lifelong passion in farming. Being raised in a farming family it was a natural fit for him and he loved every aspect of growing wheat and helping to feed the world. He often said, “Without us farmers, these poor people would starve to death,” and then would break into that unmistakable laugh of his. Wray had many hobbies that he and his wife, KC, shared. They loved to hunt, fish and go looking for mushrooms while on one of their many camping trips. He was also a wonderful chef and creating a special meal is something he took very seriously. For instance, he took special pride in hosting many Thanksgiving dinners for one of his best friends, and of course in his words, it was always “a masterpiece.” No one had a better sense of humor or enjoyed pulling pranks on his family and friends as much as Wray. For starters he insisted that he and KC get married on Leap Day so he only had to celebrate their anniversary once every four years. Or during harvest if you were new to the crew at some point you were sure to get an unexpected handful of grease from a door handle. It was just his way of saying welcome to the Hawkins harvest crew. He relished being with people and volunteering his time as is evident from his 30-plus years of service to the Pendleton Round-Up. Wray is survived by the love of his life and his best friend, his wife, KC.

Robert E. Sheldon , TM2(SS) September 27, 2021

Cold War Submarine Veteran, Robert Earl Sheldon, Bob peacefully passed away in the early morning hours of September 27th at the age of 89. He was born in Santa Rosa, CA on September 4, 1932 to Olive Eva and Marvin Earl. He graduated from the Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad in June 1951 before enlisting in the United States Navy and served from November 1951 to 1959.

One of the proudest chapters of his life was his Submarine Service aboard the USS Besugo and USS Jallao. During that time, a moment he truly loved was sailing around the continent of Africa while aboard the Jallao,  becoming the first U.S. submarine to do so.

After leaving the Navy, he would meet his beautiful wife Barbara and tied the knot October 5, 1960. A year later they’d welcome their wonderful son, Robert Jr. to the world. Bob and his family moved to Montana where he worked on ranches in Hot Springs and Niarada then eventually running a feedlot near Conrad by the late-70s and early 80s.

Bob and Barb finally planted their stakes in Dutton and remained there for many years helping raise their two grandsons, Justin and Cody. While in Dutton, he made many good friends driving truck for Dick Irvin Inc.

Some of his favorite joys in life were hunting, fishing, target and trap shooting, archery, reloading ammunition and riding his horse Firelock. Lastly, on top of everything, he loved spending every possible minute he could with his family.

Cold War Submarine Veteran, Retired Master Chief Paul Edward Rousseau, loving husband of Rita Rousseau, peacefully passed away on Saturday September 4th at the age of 80. Paul was born in Worcester, Mass. on August 19th 1941. He is survived by his wife Rita Carol Rousseau .

Paul served in the US Navy for 22 years. He was a communications officer on the George Washington Carver submarine and then later became a Navy instructor. After serving in the Navy Paul started a computer company, Paragon Systems. He retired from Paragon in 1999.

Paul loved the community of Sandbridge and the people who lived there. He served as the President of the Sandbridge Civic League for a number of years and was a life member of the Sandbridge Rescue Squad. Paul liked working with his hands and he was an excellent finish carpenter. He was a devoted friend to many. Paul had an inexhaustible source of energy, a great sense of humor, and a true appreciation of life. He was compassionate about everything he did.

Donald R. Allen of Palmetto passed away August 17, 2021, at the age of 84. He was born on November 19, 1936 in Sharon, Pennsylvania and was the son of Ted and Bertha Allen. Donald graduated from Vienna High School in 1954. Following high school he proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1958 as a submarine sailor. He was a sailor and engineer at heart. His hobbies included sailing off to blue waters, working on boats and cars, building model replicas, gardening, reading, entertaining with friends, and some might say he was a scotch connoisseur.

George F. Krauss, EM2(SS) August 11, 2021

George was inducted into the U.S. Navy on February 4, 1943, and began his training at Great Lakes Navy Training Station. After three months there, he continued to Electrical school. From there he continued his training in New London, Connecticut at the Submarine Base and then at Mare Island, CA. Once his submarine training was complete, he took a submarine tender as a passenger to Honolulu, HI where he served on the U.S.S Baya for one patrol and then the U.S.S Jallao for sixteen months.

George’s crew was roughly 30 miles from Nagasaki when the atom bomb went off. The U.S.S. Jallao returned to Pearl Harbor and then to Mare Island to be decommissioned. George left the Navy on May 7, 1946.

He continued his Electrical career after his time in the service and opened up a business with his brother-in-law. George knew his wife Edith from school, but they ended up reuniting at a local dance after the war and they married in July of 1947. They Moved to Sierra Place in 2017 to be closer to their grandchildren.

Ron was born and raised in Anson, Texas. Upon graduation from Anson High School, he selflessly joined the United States Navy.  Ron served honorably from 1955 – 1979 as a Hospital Corpsman.  He retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer and had spent the majority of his Naval career as a submariner, qualifying in Submarines aboard USS SEA OWL.

He also served in Vietnam, attached to a Marine Infantry unit, where he earned the Navy Achievement Medal with combat V and Vietnam Service Medal.  After many years traveling the world, Ron retired and returned home to his loving wife and three daughters.  Ron and his family settled in Burnet, Texas where he was employed by the LCRA.  Ron was with the LCRA for nineteen years and ended his second career as their lead electrician.

Ron was a proud American who believed strongly in love of country and support of our veterans.  He and his wife Cleo were founding members of the VFW Armadillo Post 10428 in Kingsland, Texas.  Over the years, Ron was very active in the VFW was elected the 83rd  State Commander  in 2003.  Continuing his tradition of service to others, Ron was a long-standing member of the Highland Lakes Honor Guard, rendering Military Honors to fellow veterans who passed before him. Ron also enjoyed traveling the country to see his children and grandchildren and trying his luck at the casinos along the way.

WWII Submarine Veteran,  Jack Weinstein, a long-serving Brooklyn federal judge known for crafting large, complex settlements, seeking to correct the injustices of the world from his bench and treating every defendant before him with kindness, died Tuesday. He was 99 years old.

U.S. District Judge Weinstein spent more than five decades on the federal bench in Brooklyn, where he became known for his self-styled judicial activism and iconoclastic views. He eschewed the trappings of the judiciary, wearing suits instead of robes, shaking the hands of defendants who came before him and holding some trials around his conference

Jack Bertrand Weinstein was born on Aug. 10, 1921, in Wichita, Kan., and spent much of his childhood in New York’s Brooklyn. After graduating from Brooklyn College in 1943, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, as an officer on a submarine. In 1946, he married Evelyn Horowitz Weinstein, a social worker. The couple, who have three sons, were married until her death in 2012. In 2014, he married Susan Berk.

He graduated from Columbia Law School in 1948. Several years later, he worked under civil-rights lawyer Thurgood Marshall on briefs for the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education.

Richard D. McCannes, RM1(SS) April 9, 2021

Cold War Submarine Veteran, Richard D. McCannes, 85, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 9, 2021. He was born June 10, 1935 in Jackson, Michigan to the late Victor and Gladys McCannes Haughie. He was the stepson of the late William Haughie. Richard has been a resident of Mechanicsburg for the past 10 years.

He was retired from the US Navy where he proudly served for 20 years, part of which time was stationed in Hawaii on submarine duty. His sub, the USS Flasher, travelled to several countries on secret missions during treacherous times. Thankfully, he and his crew returned home safely each time.

Mac qualified in submarines on the USS Sea Leopard (SS-483) in 1956 and was a RMC(SS) when he left the Navy.

Prior to retirement, he transferred to Groton CT, Submarine Base, and he and his wife took up residence in North Stonington, CT for 40 years. During that time, he was employed by Sonalysts, Inc. and General Dynamics, Submarine Division, lending his expertise in electronics. They moved to Mechanicsburg, PA 10 years ago to be near family. Richard was loved by his entire family and his legacy will live on forever. He possessed a genuine love of God which came from deep within him. He was a member of Immanuel Christian & Missionary Alliance Church for 8 years and served as Trustee and operated the sound booth in the evening. Richard is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Connie (Calzaretta) McCannesa daughter Christine Pruden (David)3 grandchildren, Robert Noon (Kelli), Amanda Burzynski, and Nichole Noon; 5 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

James Anthony Mehn , ET1(SS) January 9, 2021

James “Jim” Anthony Mehn, age 86, of Lebanon/Sweet Home passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 9, after a lengthy battle with leukemia and Alzheimer’s disease. Jim was born June 12, 1934 in Duquesne, Pennsylvania to Nicholas and Agnes (Delarye) Mehn.

He proudly served four years in the United States Navy, 1953 to 1957, as an Electronics Technician. He was a Petty Officer 1st Class and his service included two years aboard submarines, primarily the USS Jallao. He was in the Reserves for four years following his Honorable Discharge. During his years of service, Jim earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Jim grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, moving to Seattle with his family in 1961. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1970, and then moved to The Dalles, where he began his career as an Electrical Engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers. He came to Sweet Home in 1979 and worked at Foster Dam until his retirement.

In his younger days, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and horseback riding. After his retirement, he took up traveling. Jim was an avid reader, and he loved the challenge of newspaper crossword puzzles.

Ronald Edwin Ayres of St. Lucie Falls, Stuart Fl., passed away December 24th at 3:45 P.M.  under Hospice care.

Ronald leaves behind his wife Eileen R. Ayres; sons, Ronald T. Ayres, and Dale Ayres both of Stuart Fl. Ronald was born in Sutterville, Pa. on January 2nd 1925. He was in the Navy as a Submariner in WWII. After serving in the war, Ron came home and went to work with General Electric-Hotpoint in Newark, N.J., It was then he met his lovely wife Eileen. Ronald then joined the State Police in New Jersey where he faithfully served for 25 years achieving the rank of Captain. All done Proudly and with Pride.

Korean era/Cold War submarine veteran, James Jerry Addy passed away on November 13, 2020. He was born on December 9, 1932 in Mulberry, Arkansas. He moved to Glendora, California with his family in 1936. He attended Citrus Union High School and lettered in baseball, basketball and track. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1951 and served four years in the submarine service. After the Navy, he attended Citrus Junior College and worked for CalTech JPL in Pasadena as a rocket test technician. He then attended college in Santa Rosa before moving to Sacramento in 1958. He worked at Aerojet as a rocket test technician where he met and married Marjorie Bellato in 1959 at St Joseph Catholic Church in North Sacramento. They moved to San Jose in 1960 where he worked as a foreman for United Technology Aerospace Corp. Their four children were born in San Jose. Jerry moved back to Auburn, California with his family in 1980 and went back to work at Aerojet as an engineer. He retired in 1993. His many hobbies included model airplanes, photography, building furniture, his horses and his dog Buck.

Cold War Submariner William D. Milligan, Sr., age 82, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 9, 2020 at his home. Eileen, his wife of 63 years, was at his side. He was a beloved father of William Jr., Thomas, Donald, and Robert, and their wives, Karen, Michele, Joan, and Deborah. He was a proud and devoted “Pop Pop” to 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Bill was born in Queens on July 31,1938 to Irwin and Mae Milligan and was predeceased by his brother Allan and sister Carolee. He served in the U.S. Navy and often wore a tattered baseball cap emblazoned with USS Jallao, a Baleo-class submarine.

He qualified in submarines aboard the USS Jallao (SS-368) in 1957 and was a EN2(SS) when he left the Navy.

Bill and Eileen were married on August 24, 1957, when they were 19 and 16 years old, respectively. He was at sea when their first son, William Jr., was born the following year. Twins Thomas and Donald followed in 1960, and Robert in 1962.

After receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy, Billbout supporting his growing family. He worked in the Brooklyn Navy Yard on the USS Constitution, was a mechanic at Pan Am, and a New York City Transit Police Officer, among other jobs. After being diagnosed with asbestosis in the early 1970s, he earned his Bachelor’s degree at Dowling College and embarked on a successful career in special education. He went on to earn a Masters from C.W. Post and Certificate in Administration. He retired from the Developmental Disabilities Institute as Assistant Director of Education of the Huntington campus in 2000.

Cold War Submariner and WWII Veteran Albert J. Pappas, age 92 of Satellite Beach, Florida entered into rest on September 3, 2020. Born in Brooklyn, New York he came to Brevard County in 1968 from Long Beach, California. Albert was a Ret. Commander in the United States Navy. He was a veteran of WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War.

Albert was a member of the United States Submarine Veterans, US Coast Guard Auxiliary, NRA Life Member, Veterans of Foreign Wars, U.S. Power Squadron.

He is survived by his childrenJohn Pappas of Cocoa, FL, Carolyn Pappas of W. Hollywood, CA, and Karl Pappas of Cocoa, FL; grandchildren, Jesse and Justin Hunt. Albert was preceded in death by his wife, Kathy Pappas.

Al enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 17 during WWII. He served our great country for 31 years.

He qualified in submarines aboard the USS Carbonero (SS-337) in 1949 and was a CDR when he retired from the Navy.

In his spare time he enjoyed sailing, traveling, volunteering, and promoting boating safety. He was always willing to lend a hand, had a smile on his face, and a joke to tell.

William “Bill’ Roy Hyde  RMCM(SS)  August 25, 2020

William (Bill) Roy Hyde, 92 passed away peacefully at his home in El Cajon, CA, on August 25, 2020. Bill was born on July 15, 1928 in Detroit, MI, to Thomas and Helen Hyde.
Bill joined the Navy at 17 embarking upon a 20 year career in the submarine services and radio communications, retiring as a Chief. He served aboard the submarines Sea Poacher, Valador, K-2, Jallao, Raton, the nuclear powered Sargo and the Razorback. His Navy education and experiences had a profound and lasting effect on his life. After his retirement, he owned a small tv repair business and also worked for Montgomery Wards for a short time, until a neighbor talked him into applying for a job with SUPSHIP. Bill then dedicated the next 20 years to overseeing the quality of Naval ship building.
While working for SUPSHIP Bill noticed a trash can filled will scraps of metal and copper. He saw a piece of copper that he thought he could make something out of. He took that piece home to sculpt, starting years of working with copper and pieces, creating many amazing pieces of art. His biggest project was the making a life size eagle, made of copper, which has been used as a centerpiece for photos at many Eagle Scout award ceremonies.
Bill was a proud and active member of the El Cajon Elks Lodge 1812 for over 35 years. The friendships he made there, created lasting bonds as his second family. He was known all over Elkdom as the Grand Sculptor. His love for art and sculpting carried on into the Elks. His greatest accomplishment in wood sculpturing is the year long making of a life size elk, currently proudly displayed in the lobby of the El Cajon Elks Lodge. Bill’s legacy will live on and will NEVER be forgotten.

Raymond James Cook GM2(SS)  April 28, 2020

Raymond James Cook, 95, of Kent, WA, died peacefully August 28, 2020 while visiting his daughter in Long Beach, WA. He was born on October 4, 1925 to parents Ray and Agnes Cook in Ogema, MN. Ray enlisted in Minneapolis, MN August 4, 1943 and served his country as a submariner in the US Navy during WWII. He made the 1st War Patrol aboard USS Sea Robin (SS-407), qualified in submarines in USS Piranha (SS-389) on September 12, 1945, and was GM2(SS) when released by the Navy in September 1946. After his discharge he studied to become an electrician and then worked for Puget Power for 40 years, retiring in 1997.

Ray was a kind and fair man with a terrific sense of humor. He was known by all for his love of sports and current events, and could often be found in his recliner watching the news, the Seahawks, or the Mariners.

Walter Junior Burton SA(SS)  April 28, 2020

Walter Junior Burton, 77, formerly of rural Peru, Indiana, flew away on angels’ wings into the arms of Jesus, from The Veteran’s Home at King, Wisconsin, on May 28, 2020.

Born September 22, 1942, in Somerset, Kentucky, he was the son of Walter Eli and Otha Bell Hawk Burton. He was the middle child of eleven children. The family moved to Peru, Indiana, in the 1940’s, and Walter graduated from Jefferson Township High School, in Mexico, Indiana, in 1961. On May 13, 1962, he married his first love, his “sweetie,” Sandra Kay Ahlfeld. They celebrated thirty-nine years of marriage until her passing on June 3, 2001.

After graduating from high school, Walter enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served until 1971. He then joined the Naval Reserves until 1975. During his time in the Navy, he served on the USS Jallao SS368, a Balao-class submarine, the USS Rayburn SSBN635, a Polaris Ballistic Missile Submarine, where he was a Polaris missile technician. A Vietnam veteran, he served four patrols and received his national Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Award.

In December of 2002, Walter moved to Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, where he lived with the second love of his life, Joanne Forbes. She survives with his Wisconsin family, which includes Joanne’s four children, nine grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.

After leaving the military, Walter started his own business, Walter Burton and Associates.  He installed many industrial boilers and provided service to many of them.  He was an expert at combustion electronic controls, instrumentation, burners, and flame management systems.

BERG, Thomas (n), 97, died April 24, 2020. He was born to Norwegian immigrants Thor and Bergliot Berg on July 19, 1922, in Aberdeen, Washington. Tom graduated in 1940 from Weatherwax High School in Aberdeen. Shortly after he turned 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Following boot camp in San Diego, he requested assignment to the USS Arizona to be with a high school buddy who had joined up a year earlier. His request was denied, and he was assigned to the USS Tennessee. (As things went, this was fortunate.) On the morning of December 7, 1941, Tom saw the first Japanese Zeros flying over Pearl Harbor. He spent that day of the Pearl Harbor attack at his battle station in boiler room No. 7. That night, he was able to sneak up to the main deck to look around at the damage. Honolulu was in complete blackout. The only light he saw was from the fires on the various other battleships and on Ford Island. When the USS Tennessee was drydocked for an overhaul in September 1942, Tom was transferred to submarine duty in New London, Connecticut. After earning his dolphins, he was assigned to the USS O-4, a World War I submarine. From April 1943 to June 1944 he helped train future submariners. He was then accepted into the V-12 officer training program, and he began his studies at the University of Washington. After he was honorably discharged from the Navy in September 1946. In addition to his wife Lesa, Tom is survived by his three children from his first marriage: Bart (Sheri), Janet (Randy) and TR (Kimberly), all of Bainbridge Islandseven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren in Washington, Oregon, and South Dakota.Born in Aberdeen, WA 7/19/1922, Eternal Patrol 4/24/2020, age 97. Cold war submarine veteran, William Henry Fox, of Laurel, DE went home to his heavenly reward on April 8, 2020. Born on April 14, 1943 in Pompton Plains, NJ, to Kenneth Fox and Marion Kirk Fox. Bill served in the US Navy aboard the submarine USS Jallao. He was a trooper in the NJ State Police, worked in the Arson and Bomb Unit and retired in 1995 with the rank of Lieutenant.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lee Fox, daughter LeeAnne Jones and husband Peter, and their daughter Chloe of Haddon Township, NJ, daughter Billie Fox, her children Dillion and Morgan Fletcher of Delmar, MD, son Rhett Fox, his wife Susan and their children, Ashlee and Jacob Fox of Parker, CO. Brother Thomas Fox of Easton, PA.
Bill was an avid Horseshoe pitcher and competed in tournaments, in NJ, TN, MD, DE and FL. He won 9 class championships. He competed and place fourth in class B for the World Tournament held in Florence, SC in 2018.
Bill and wife Lee raised their family in Washington, NJ. They retired to Wears Valley, TN and spent 15 years enjoying the beautiful Smoky Mountains. The then relocated to Laurel, DE to be near family.
Bill was a throat cancer survivor in 2015, lung cancer survivor in 2017, but succumbed to end state Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
He was an active member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, Laurel, DE where he was President of the Trustees.

Alton T. Rogers Jr.  RMCM(SS)  March 1, 2020

Cold war submarine veteran, ROGERS, Alton T. Jr., 89, of Uncasville, died Sunday, March 1, 2020. He was the husband of Geraldine L. Rogers to whom he was married for 70 years. They grew up together in Lisbon Falls, Maine and graduated from Lisbon High School in 1948. Alton retired from the U.S. Navy after serving on numerous submarines. The last two were nuclear submarines, the USS Tullibee, and the USS Henry L. Stimson. He served as chief of the boat (COB) on both of these submarines. He received a commendation from the Navy for saving the life of a fellow shipmate involving an oxygen fire on the USS Stimson, while it was being built at General Dynamics Electric Boat. He also retired from AT&T after 20 years and finished his career at United Nuclear in Montville. His greatest joy was hunting with his boys. He was a ham radio operator with the call sign of WIVRT. Alton also managed a Babe Ruth baseball team in Mystic and served as secretary for the league. Mr. Rogers also was a member of the Arcadia Lodge of Masons in Durham, Maine for 64 years, as well as the Fleet Reserve Branch #20 in Groton.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children: Jill Rogers, Robert Rogers and his wife Marie Rogers, Marvin Rogers and his fiancé Amy St. Onge and Michael Rogers and his wife Sherry Rogers. He also leaves his grandchildren: Nicholas, Nathan and Nicole Witcraft, and Danielle Rogers; as well as seven great-grandchildren.

George “Judy” Belancik, 91, was born April 15, 1928 in Duquesne. He was the son of the late Stephen and Elizabeth (Sabol) Belancik. Beloved husband of the late Violet (Obradovich). He is survived by his loving children Michael “Sonny” Galagaza of Redondo Beach, Mary Simon of West Mifflin, George “Guj” Belancik of Hermosa Beach, Debbie (Jim) Driscoll of West Mifflin, and Richard “Blee” (Doreen) Belancik of West Mifflin.

Cold war submarine veteran, Robert Joseph Draeger, 69, of Indian Harbour Beach, lost his courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, February 8, 2020 in the comfort of his own home. Robert qualified on the USS Casimir Pulaski (SSBN-633) in 1969, joined Snug Harbor in Nov 2013. He also served on the USS Jallao (SS-368).
Prior to his retirement, Robert spent many years selling cars which he greatly enjoyed. He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, avid fisher and golfer.

Bob was a Holland Club member of USSVI Snug Harbor Base.

Kenneth Thomas Pitman QMC(SS) 1/24/2020

Kenneth Thomas Pitman, Sr. (CPO US Navy, Retd), born April 4, 1938 died on Friday, January 24, 2020 at his residence with his loving family by his side.

Educated in the Manchester School System, Ken began his naval military career for recruit training in Bainbridge, MD. Upon completion, he reported for duty on the USS Antietam (CVS36). Following three years of service, Ken attended Basic Submarine School in Philadelphia, PA and after completion reported aboard his first submarine, the USS Jallao (SS368) qualifying in submarines. Next duty was on the USS Sarda (488). He was then assigned for the new construction of the USS Haddo (SSN 604). Next duty was new construction of the USS Gato (SSN 615). While on the Gato, Ken was promoted to Chief Quartermaster. He then became an instructor QM submarine training at the US Navy Submarine School, New London, CT and was instrumental in establishing the standard for Quartermaster Submarine Training. Chief Pitman was then on the decommissioning crew of the USS Albacore (AGSS569). Ken then retired from the USS Trepang (SSN674), his last submarine. Retired from the Navy in 1975 as QMC(SS).

Ken was an avid Skeet Shooter winning many state titles and was a member of the US Navy Retired Team, better known as “The Old Goats.” Ken obtained his private pilot’s license. His hobbies included skydiving, walking and fishing, and cribbage, and especially at his camp “Pit’s Pit” on Merrymeeting Lake.

Ken was a member of the 20th Skeet and Clays, Hooksett, NH; NHSSA, NSSA, AFSA, American Legion Post 79, Nautilus Branch Submarine Veterans, Groton, CT, the Holland Club, Albacore Park, and MMLA. He also was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and enjoyed drinking Moxie.

Ken was employed by the City of Manchester, retiring after 16 years as the Engineering Tech from the Assessor’s office.

Robbie joined the Navy in 1952, qualified in submarines on the USS GRENADIER (SS-525) in 1956 and was a EMC(SS) when he left the Navy in 1973.

He also served aboard SKIPJACK, SKATE, COBBLER, JALLAO and GROUPER.

Lawrence “Larry” Gallagher, FTCS(SS) November 18, 2019

A true Patriot, Larry served 20 years in the United States Naval Submarine Force and retired honorably in 1981. Upon his retirement, he worked in the Defense Industry until 1992 always keeping the Submarine Fleet as his number one priority. Some would say Larry was a true renaissance man, a man that knew everything about everything. But his true calling was as an avid woodworker; he was meticulous in his work. In 1993, Larry and his wife Gail started Woodcrafters Furniture Service in Swansea Massachusetts where they bought, sold and refinished furniture for over 10 years. He was always able to make a derelict piece of furniture look brand new again. When Larry finally hung up his dust mask and wood tools, he and Gail headed south. In his later years, Larry enjoyed collecting firearms and spent many hours at the shooting range. He also loved listening to music and always looked forward to dancing with his wife. One of their fondest memories was the river cruise trip they made to Normandy, France in the Spring of 2017. Even though they had been on several Cruises over the years, this was a trip that Larry and Gail always wanted to take, thankfully, they finally found the time.

Gerald’s  life was dedicated to helping others even when he didn’t have enough for himself. The eldest of 8 siblings, he was always willing to assist in their upbringing. While his father was deployed, Jerry would ride his bicycle to the grocery store to purchase food for his family.

Jerry, was only a fighter when he needed to protect someone, but he could certainly hold his own. He won the Golden Gloves in 1955, and he used that tenacity to protect his clan at family weddings. One morning soon after high school, his friends woke him and said they were joining the Navy together. He served aCbove and below the waves on a radar picket ship off the coast of San Diego and on one of the last operational diesel powered submarines.

Professionally, Jerry was just as generous as he was personally, giving and mentoring as often as possible. As a caddy, mailman, camera salesman, photographer, stock broker, manager, arbitrator and wrestling official he always strove for excellence. He saw and developed talent everywhere he could, often calling the parents of employees to tell them that their children were doin’ a bang up job. He was a loving father, husband, brother, and son, but to many he was also Jug, Chief, Pops, and Pard. Jerry’s family has grown with each soul he touched, and his wife has helped shoulder that weight for 62 years.

To that end, Jerry was more concerned about others than himself. Jerry, you were always the kind of man who saw every problem as an opportunity. We will miss you terribly and see you in everything we do, and we promise that we will be okay. You worked so hard to spread kindness into the world, and you couldn’t have done a better job. You’re a Keeper.

Theodore Marvin Mincer IC3(SS) 10/2/2019

Theodore “Ted” Marvin Mincer, age 84 of Bella Vista, Arkansas passed away Wednesday, October 2nd at Northwest Medical Center surrounded by family.  Ted was born November 26, 1934 to Orlo and Winnie Mincer in Spencer, Iowa.

He graduated from Spencer High School in May of 1952.  On February 5, 1954, Ted enlisted in the United States Navy where he served his country on various submarines as an operating electrician.  He was honorable discharged December 4, 1957. Coming home on one of his leaves in 1954 he met his beloved wife, Shirley at the Spencer, Iowa skating rink. They were married September 26, 1956. Ted farmed until 1968 and then sold health and life insurance until he retired in 1989. He loved watching sports and playing golf. His love for golf brought him to Bella Vista.  As a farmer he couldn’t understand “what those idiots were doing chasing a white ball around the field.”

Ted had a way of making every stranger feel like a friend. He will be forever remembered for his sense of humor, warm smile and loving heart. Ted may have been small in stature but his kindness and thoughtfulness for everyone and his love and dedication to his family made him a giant of a man.

Donald Robert Rae FT1(SS) September 28, 2019

Donald was born in Modesto on May 6, 1934 to William and Dorothy Rae. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 48 years, Annabelle Sousa Rae, son David Rae and stepson Mark Brindeiro.

Don grew up in Newman and Turlock. He graduated from Turlock High School in 1952. He entered the Navy in October of 1952 and was discharged November of 1986, completing a 34-year Naval career. He served on 9 different submarines out of 7 bases as a Missile Fire Control Technician. Don finished his career as an instructor at Pearl Harbor Naval Base on Oahu, Hawaii, teaching Navy officers how to calculate hitting a target thousands of miles away. After retiring from the Navy, he became a counselor at Teal Middle School in Empire and retired from there in 1999.
Don married his second wife, Imogene, in 2004. He loved his three children and seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren as his own. He never referred to them as stepchildren.
Don loved to travel. He and his wife Annabelle traveled all over Europe. In their 15 years of marriage, he and Imogene went on 30 cruises and several land tours, completing Don’s bucket list to set foot on all 7 continents. The last of which was Antarctica this past November of 2018.

Victor Charles Thomas, ETR2(SS) August 21, 2019

Victor Charles Thomas, a resident of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, passed on September 21, 2019 while in the care of North Hawaii Community Hospital. Victor was 82 years old, and was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Vic, or Dick-Dick as his childhood friends called him, was the son of a coal mining superintendent and although he told of many fond childhood memories, he longed to escape the mining community and see the world. Victor enlisted in the Navy and became a submariner. Primarily a Sonar Operator, Victor earned his “Dolphins” by qualifying as fit to operate any task on his submarine, The U.S.S.Conger. Following his Navy enlistment, Vic came to work for the world’s largest computer company, IBM, as a Customer Engineer. Over His 33 year career, Victor provided advisory and programming services to clients world wide; working in locations such as Brazil and Japan, and in state side services for, among others, NASA in Cocoa Beach.

Devoted father of Mary (Michael) Turner of Roanoke, VA, Joanne (Andrew) Needham of White River Junction, VT, Elizabeth (Richard) Baranick of Portland, ME, John (Susan) Baranick of Assonet, MA, and Susan Baranick of Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA.

Bill lived in South Boston, was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII, and was a triple Eagle from Boston College. He retired after 27 years as general counsel for the Badger Company. For many years, Bill was an active volunteer for the Town of Dover, the Church of the Most Precious Blood, and recently at New Pond Village.

Gary Lynn Rhoades (SS) August 7, 2019

Gary was born to Robert E. Rhoades and Jean A. Rhoades on September 15, 1946. He was a 1964 graduate of Lebanon High School, and upon graduation he enlisted with the United States Navy. Gary proudly served his country for four years as a Submariner. His service included time aboard the USS Torsk, the USS Cutlass, and the USS Jallao. After completing his faithful service to this great nation, Gary worked the remainder of his career with Praxair, Inc.

Outside of his full-time work, Gary raised some of the finest Red Angus beef cattle on this side of the Mississippi. He enjoyed spending time with his dog Coco, woodworking, writing, and building some of the most intriguing contraptions to help simplify the daily chores of life. His love of country, devotion to family, and child-like devious nature will be greatly missed by those who knew him best. And, never to be forgotten, his world-famous baked macaroni and cheese.

Robert E. Green, CDR July 6, 2019

Robert E. Green residing at Atlantic Shores in Virginia Beach, VA, passed away on July 6, 2019. He was born to Earnest and Xelma Green in Darks County, Ohio, on June 6, 1929.

He grew up in Greensville, Ohio, attended school there, and was active in many sports and activities. As a senior in high school he applied for a NROTC scholarship. He was accepted and enrolled in the NROTC program at Ohio State University. Upon graduation he was commissioned an Ensign and went on to active duty. During his naval service he served on various ships and shore assignments. He served in submarine duty and was Commanding Officer of the USS JALLAO SS368. Upon completion of twenty-six years he retired with the rank of CDR.

He married his first wife, Beverly A. Fowlkes on June 18, 1953. Naval service took them to many assignments in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. Beverly died in 2003. He moved into Atlantic Shores in October of 2003 and met his future second wife Gerrie M. Smudsky. They married in December, 2004. Robert is survived by his wife Gerrie, daughter Stephanie of Virginia Beach, son, Kenneth Green of Rockville, NC, two grandsons, Ryan and Christopher, five step children, Elaine (Ken), Edward, Scott, Robin and Clayton as well as eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren he inherited when he married Gerrie.

RADM Lewin was born in Rockland, Maine, the son of Brig Gen Theodore E. and Florida Cooke Lewin. He grew up mostly in Augusta, ME, attended Cony High School (1951), attended Universityof South Carolina for one year as a Navy ROTC student and entered the US Naval Academy, graduating with honors in 1956. In 1982 he completed the Government Executive Program in National and International Security, JFK School of Government, Harvard University.

He served on one surface ship, USS Thuban (AKA19) and one diesel sub USS Jallo (SS-368), four nuclear polaris subs: USS George Washington (SSBN-598), USS Stonewall Jackson (SSBN-634)(plank owner), USS Henry Clay (SSBN-625) and commanded USS John Marshall (SSBN-611), completing 15 Polaris patrols, six in command. Among his more senior assignments were Deputy Commander Squadron 15 in Guam, CO Nuclear Training Unit West Milton, NY, and Commander Squadron Two in Groton, CT. As a one star he commanded Naval Base Seattle; and Director, Strategic Submarine Division in the office of the CNO. With two stars he Commanded Naval Forces, Philippines; and President, Board of Inspection and Survey in Washington, DC. After 36 years on active duty, he retired in 1992.
He has been awarded the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with gold star in lieu of second award, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), the Humanitarian Service Medal (two awards), the National Defense Service Medal (three awards), the Sea Service Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon (three awards), and the Republic of Philippines Legion of Honor Medal in the degree of Commander.
After retirement, he worked in the nuclear power field for Sonalyst, an employee owned professional services business.

In 1999, the family built a camp on Lake Damariscotta, ME, where they made cherished friends and enjoyed life from June to September. For 20 years they spent January to April at Countryside Golf and Country Club in Naples, FL where they also made cherished friends. Ted and Jan made eight trips to Europe with three other USNA 1956 couples. Due to the fortunate South Pacific duties, Ted became an expert shell collector. He was a many year season ticket holder to the Washington Opera, the USNA football games, and a lover of the Redskins. Every day he read the Washington Post from cover to cover starting with the Sports Section. He loved to tell and hear stories and jokes. His many friends will miss them.

Richard E. Whitmire, 83, Bellevue, passed away on Tuesday morning, June 11, 2019.  He was born on February 7, 1936 in Milwaukee to the late Richard and Lorraine (Kornetzky) Whitmire.  Richard served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1952 to 1956 and went on to serve active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1956 until his retirement in 1975.  On May 26, 1962, he married Darlene Beth at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay.  After his retirement from the Navy, he worked for the city of Green Bay Metropolitan Sewerage for many years until his retirement.  Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.
He is survived by his loving wife, Darlene his sons, Michael and Marshall; grandchildren, Abbey (Adam) Nelson, Trevor Whitmire and Ethan Whitmire; great grandchildren, Audrey Nelson and Adam Nelson, Jr., and many other relatives and friends.

Qualified in submarines on the USS Grenadier (SS-525) in 1956 and was a ENC(SS) when he left the Navy.

Melvin Patterson Polen, HMC(SS) January 4, 2019

Melvin Patterson Polen passed away peacefully on January 4, 2019, at the Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home in Bonham, Texas at the age of 88. Melvin was born on July 18, 1930, in Cambridge, Ohio, the son of Mary Irene Patterson and Lloyd Lewis Polen.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy after high school and served for 20 years, training as a Hospital Corpsman and qualifying in submarines. His distinguished service awards included a Korean Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, and several Good Conduct Medals. Following his military retirement, Melvin and his family moved to EL Paso, Texas, where Melvin worked for several automobile dealerships before returning to school to study accounting. He subsequently ran a thriving bookkeeping practice serving small businesses in the El Paso area. Melvin relocated to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area in the late 1970s, where he embarked upon a long and successful career in insurance sales. Melvin was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years and also was active in the Elk’s Lodge. He devoted much of his free time to these institutions, as well as to the U.S. Submarine Veterans, Inc. Dallas base.

Melvin enjoyed traveling, sports, music, and dancing. He was also a history buff and particularly enjoyed visiting our nation’s capital. Melvin was known for his great sense of humor and always enjoyed making people laugh. He adored children and was also known for taking in many a stray pet.

Richard Wendell Stein, age 87 of Kettering, passed away Saturday, November 10, 2018 at Walnut Creek Nursing Center. He was born October 17, 1931 in Tiffin, Ohio to the late Wendell A. and Ida M. (Shank) Stein.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Jeanne M. Stein; daughter, Karen L. LeFrere, son, Robert W. Stein, grandchildren, Jesse Emile Williams and Dawn Marie Smith and sisters, Sharon K. Davis and Norma J. Brown.

Richard was a 1950 graduate of Co-Op High School in Dayton, OH and enlisted in the United States Navy. He served on the USS Jallao submarine during the Korean War. Richard was employed by NCR as a tool and die maker for 27 years. He went on to work and retire from Rainbow Tool in 1996. Richard enjoyed many past times over the years including archery, golf, target shooting, darts and gardening.

James Paul Gallagher, HMC(SS) November 6, 2018

Born Nov. 6, 1936 in Big Mine Run, PA. Son of Anthony and Mary ( Kane ) Gallagher. Survived by wife of 63 years, the former Catherine Helen ( Smith ) Gallagher. Jim was a pioneer in the occupation of Physician Assistant in the Cambria County Area. He provided primary care to the people of Nanty Glo and the surrounding area from 1975 through 1998 at the Ebandjieff Community Health Center. Jim was a 1975 graduate of the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center Penn State Campus in the MEDEX Physician Assistant program. Retired from active duty in the U.S. Navy in 1974 with 20 years of service and earned the rank of Chief Hospital Corpsman (HMC). He served on several ships, among them, the USS York County, USS Charles P. Cecil and submarines Jallao and the Tinosa. He enjoyed a long retirement, wintering in Davenport, FL., his interests included playing cards, darts, square dancing and golf. He enjoyed large family gatherings and spending time with family and friends.

A Seattle native, Gibbs was born on December 4, 1925 to Clark and Alpha Lincoln. He died August 29, 2018 with family at his side. Gibbs grew up in Laurelhurst and attended Roosevelt High before entering the Navy at age 17. He served for three years on the Submarine Force in the Pacific Theatre and was aboard the USS Jallao in the Sea of Japan when the war ended. Afterwards Gibbs attended the University of Washington during the day and Seattle college in the evenings. Gibbs had a variety of interests and passions leading him to a variety of careers throughout his lifetime. He started out as station manager at KIRO radio and later worked for many years as a stockbroker before testing his entrepreneurial strengths, creating a magazine titled Washington Welcome, and opening a successful restaurant in Poulsbo. He married Shirley Torrance in 1953. After Shirley passed, Gibbs renewed a lifelong friendship with Claudia Eland and enjoyed another 11 wonderful years. After Claudia’s death in 2012, Gibbs moved to Parkshore Retirement Community where he served as Secretary, Vice President, President and Past President while in his 90’s. Gibbs loved engaging with others and had a true gift for meeting people and making them feel special. He loved learning, everything outdoors, animals, helping others and most importantly, spending time with family and his many friends. He held a special place in his heart for Parkshore staff who greatly added to his happiness while at Parkshore. Gibbs was truly one of a kind. He was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.

Lyon, Patrick Gerald 84 years old of Minneapolis passed away August 8, 2018. He served his country for 20 years in the U.S. Navy. He was a retiree of the Minneapolis Park Board. Preceded in death by parents, Everett and Marianne Lyon; sons, Donald G. and David J. Lyon; and brother, Terrence Lyon. Patrick is survived by son, Jack (Tammy) Lyon; Nicholas Anaya; & sister, Marianne (Richard) Seakamp.

Cdr. Matthew Clark Swanson USN (Ret), son of the late Sigurd V. and Clarice W. of New London, CT, passed away surrounded by family on June 22, 2018. He married Eleanor Johnson (deceased 2015), daughter of the late Victor S. and Ruth M. Johnson. They had three sons: Matthew of Supply, NC, Mark (deceased), and Luke of Virginia Beach, VA.

A graduate of Bulkeley High School, he went on to graduate the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point (B.S.) and George Washington University (M.S.). While in the Navy, attended the US Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA. and the Naval War College in Newport, RI.

He served on the destroyer USS Hyman (DD 732); the submarines Hardhead (SS 365), Albacore (AGSS 569) and the Jallao (SS 368); the US Naval Staffs of Commander Submarine Force Atlantic, Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force; and the NATO Staffs of Commander in Chief Western Atlantic and the Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic.

Upon retirement from the Navy, he made his home in Virginia Beach, Va. He worked for the Atlantic Analysis Corporation of Norfolk, VA. and Techplan Corporation of Washington, D.C.

Clark was an enthusiastic supporter of community sports programs, coaching teams in boys baseball, and football, winning three city championship basketball teams at midget, intermediate, and junior levels.

He was an ardent sailor and loved to cruise the coastal waters of the East Coast on his boat “Valhalla”.

James Ray Pickett, 95, of Del City passed away May 30, 2018. James was born April 24, 1923 to Cassus Clay and Vera (Costie) Pickett in Marietta, Oklahoma. James graduated from Marietta High School. Following high school, he joined the United States Navy and served his country from 1943 to 1962. James was an avid golfer and loved to be out on the green. He scored a lot of hole in ones. He also loved to hunt with his bird dogs. James was a helicopter pilot and instructor. James loved numbers as he almost had a photographic memory for numbers. This came in handy for his love of playing dominos and bingo. James is survived by his wife, Mary (Coffey) Pickett

After graduating from Grosse Pointe High School in Michigan, he attended the Naval Submarine School in Groton, CT and then served on the submarines USS Bang (SS-385) and USS Jallao (SS-368). Following service he worked for Pratt-Whitney in CT, but was transferred to Florida where he also joined the Air Force Reserves as a Staff Sergeant

Gardner W. Brown Sr., EM2(SS) January 27, 2018

Gardiner “Guy” William Brown, Sr., of Norridgewock, died peacefully in Cedar Ridge Center on Jan. 27, 2018, at the age of 88.

Guy was born on Jan. 7, 1930, in Moscow, Maine, to Albertine Leet and Henry Brown. He graduated from Skowhegan High School in 1949 and soon after enlisted the United States Navy where he proudly served as a submariner for 22 years, and then was on reserve duty for ten years. Guy is a veteran of the Korean War and earned several medals during his military career.
He married Julia, his best friend and sweetheart, on Dec. 31, 1951, in Madison. The couple resided in California, Virginia, and Connecticut before moving back to their home state of Maine in 1972. Guy was a loving and caring husband to Julia for 66 years and was immensely proud of the family they raised together.
Above all, Guy loved his family and his country. The values of honor, courage, commitment, and patriotism he learned in the Navy stayed with him the rest of his life. He enjoyed nature and being active. He was an expert fisherman, yodeler, poet, cribbage player, and ham radio operator. He was also a master storyteller and the king of dramatic pauses, as his family and friends will attest. He was known for being devilishly handsome, witty, and generous, but not necessarily in that order. His children learned many valuable lessons from him over the years, among them: Don’t sweat the small stuff, and it’s all small stuff.

Richard “Dick” Herter, 75, of Parkersburg died Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo. He was born May 11, 1942 in Evergreen Park, Illinois, son of Henry and Emilie (Brookins) Herter. He married Ivadean Haskenhoff on July 6, 1963 in Hawkeye, Iowa.

He graduated from Calumet High School in 1960 and served in the US Navy during the Cold War Era. He was a Journeyman Wireman with IBEW Local 288 and then a delivery driver for Varsity Cleaners, retiring in 2005. He was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church; a lifetime member of the Cedar Falls AMVETS Post #49 and past Commander of the United States Submarine Veterans Iowa Base.

Qualified in submarines on the USS Robert E Lee (SSBN-601) in 1963 and was a TM2(SS) when he left the Navy.

Lawrence “Larry” Russell Bentley, 81, passed away December 19, 2017. Larry was born March 10, 1936 to Clyde Bentley and Eleanor Edwards Bentley in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Larry was a United States Navy Submariner, 1954-1956, and served in the Reserves for 4 years. He graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Electrical Engineering. He spent his work life in Civil Service at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio and Eglin AFB where he retired after 34 years in 1995.

Larry married the love of his life, Dolores, on January 23, 1960, in Lafayette, Louisiana. They raised their 3 children here in FWB since 1964. The family enjoyed the beach, boating and camping together. Larry was an avid runner and logged hundreds of miles on the streets of Ft Walton and Eglin. He later coached the cross country runners at Choctaw.

Larry is a member of the Shalimar United Methodist Church; Elks Lodge 1795; Mobile Roadrunners RV Club; and the Submarine Drum Base.

Qualified in submarines on the USS Jallao (SS-368) in 1955 and was a EM3(SS) when he left the Navy.

Owen Lowry Gatewood of North Port, FL passed away peacefully on November 8, 2017. He was born in Crown City, OH on September 1, 1934 to Melvin E and Annabelle (Owens) Gatewood. A 1952 graduate of Jackson High School in Jackson, OH, Owen served on a Navy submarine from 1953-1973, during both the Korean and Vietnam wars. On October 5, 1971, Owen married the love of his life, Barbara (Caisse) and lovingly adopted her 3 daughters. For 25 years, Owen worked as a painting contractor in the Norwich, CT area and in 1997, he and his family relocated from Baltic, CT to North Port, FL.

Owen cherished the experiences he had and the memories he made during his career in the Navy. His proudest time was being on board the George Washington during the firing of the first Polaris missile off Cape Canaveral, FL. He greatly enjoyed his associations with the Fleet Reserve, Submarine Veterans, American Legion, VFW and Elks Club, but most of all, Owen loved time spent with his family and friends.

Qualified in submarines on the USS Toro (SS-422) in 1955 and was a CSC(SS) when he left the Navy.

David William McGraw, MM3(SS) October 30, 2017

David William McGraw, 77, died October 30, 2017, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He was born June 6, 1940, in Blue Hill, the son of William H. and Anna L. McGraw.

Dave graduated from George Stevens Academy and joined the Navy. He served aboard the USS Jallao SS-368. After four years in the service he went to Billings, Montana, to work and attended college under the GI Bill. It was in Billings he married his high school sweetheart, Ann Wentworth, and they were married for 52 years.

After graduation from college, he and Ann moved back to Maine. David started Blue Hill Plumbing and Heating, and Flye Point Marine where he built boats. A few years ago he had a rock wall built the length of his submarine on his property by a good friend, Kevin Piper. He had it dedicated to all submarines lost at sea. David was very proud of this wall.

He is survived by his wife, Anntwo nephews, Stephen and Joseph McGraw; several very special cousins; and two dear gals, Teri Slaven and Ciona Urbrich.

Benjamin Charles Flynn, 83, of Billings, passed away on Oct. 18, 2017, following a brief illness. Ben was born on Jan. 2, 1934, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to John and Lucille (Murphy) Flynn. He was one of 13 children.

Following primary education, Ben enlisted in the Navy, where he would serve for over 20 years. Primarily, his duties were assigned to submarine services, but his skill as an electrician allowed him much opportunity in the Navy. He achieved the highest-ranking enlisted Chief Petty Officer and was honorably discharged as Master Chief in 1961. Ben was married to Elizabeth Krug in 1956, and two children joined the family, George and Bonnie. They family lived in various places throughout his service time. They divorced in 1987.

Following Ben’s discharge from the Navy, he received his BS from Rocky Mountain College and was proud of his 4.0 GPA. He became a teacher and later worked as an electrician until retirement.

Ben married Marjorie Timmons in 1991, welcoming her children Jacquie and Mark into the family. Throughout his life, he enjoyed hiking, traveling and bowling, especially at Sunset Bowl.

Ben was a kind and generous man, and an Irishman through and through. He was a dedicated provider for all those entrusted to his care and he will be deeply missed by everyone he knew and loved. Retired from the Navy as EMCM(SS)

John David Hanniford, ENC(SS) September 23, 2017

John David Hanniford, 88, formerly of Uncasville, CT died peacefully on Sept. 23, 2017 at Colchester, CT. He was the devoted husband of maritime artist Sultana (Issideridy) Hanniford who predeceased him. Born in Royal Oak, Michigan, he was the son of the late Patrick and Margaret (Kennedy) Hanniford. At age 16, John joined the Merchant Marines and sailed the Great Lakes and around the world. In 1951, he joined the U.S. Navy and went into submarines. He attended Great Lakes Boot Camp and Basic Sub School, and afterward served on the USS Grampus, USS Cavalla, USS Spikefish, and the USS Conger. John attended NUE School in New London, CT and NTU in West Milton, NY in 1960, and then served on the USS Ethan Allen. From 1964-67, John was a Basic Sub School Instructor and then served on the USS Alexander Hamilton. After retiring in 1971 as a Chief on the USS Jallao, he worked on the U.S. Navy Submarine Base in Groton in the heating plant. He was a member of the Submarine Veterans and was a member of SubVets Holland Club Groton Base. John was also a docent for the USS Nautilus Memorial Museum in Groton, CT. John enjoyed going to art shows with his wife, watching John Wayne movies, cheering for the UConn Woman’s Basketball team and reading submarine history.

Fisher, Louis J. 71, of Marine City, entered eternal life on September 20, 2017, surrounded by family and friends at his side. He was born February 27, 1946 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Louis and Elizabeth Fisher.

Louis entered into the United States Navy and served his country proudly during the Vietnam War. He worked for Ford Motor Company for over 30 years and after retirement he found a new career as a bus driver for Richmond Community Schools. As a bus driver Louis drove students with special needs and he found much happiness knowing he was making a difference in the lives of the children and their families. All the children had genuine love for their “Mr. Lou”. From a child and into adulthood Louis enjoyed a close relationship with his father that included boating, fishing, snowmobiling, hunting, and doing cement work. Those interests stayed with Lou throughout his life, and he was always happiest when enjoying the outdoors. To his family and friends Lou was known as the eternal jokester and he relished in teasing and pulling fast ones on his loved ones while always keeping a straight face. You knew he loved you if he was inclined to playfully mess with you. Of course, he passed this on to his three sons as his “Fish Tales’ Legacy” lives on.

He was born in Milwaukee, WI on February 9, 1936, to the late Harold Hirt and Jane (Hufschmidt) Bair. On November 16, 1957, he married Viva Jean Oetzel in Milwaukee, WI. Don was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Shawano, WI. He graduated from North Division High School, Milwaukee in 1953 and he served his country in the U.S. Navy as a submariner from 1956-1958.

MORRIS, James Samuel, succumbed to a short illness on April 1, 2017. Jim was born in Brownwood, TX on September 29, 1942 to Ernest and Alice Morris.He was a generous, gentle soul always willing to help those around him. He was preceded in death by both parents. Survivors include his wife Teresa, two sons, Jim in Kerrville and Kael in Brownwood, six grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, numerous cousins and a brother Bob and his wife Candi. Jim graduated from Brownwood High School and, shortly thereafter, enlisted in the US Navy from which he retired 20 years later. He was a member of the submarine service and worked on Sealab 3, the naval program for astronauts. He ended his regular service in recruiting at a number of different locations, the final one being Brownwood. He was an avid outdoorsman/hunter and the quieter side stayed involved in writing. Jim had a deep appreciation for life that was occasionally put to a test by his love for powerful cars. Always willing to share, he has many friends and will be missed by one and all.

Rev. Helms was born on December 19, 1932 and passed away on Friday, March 3, 2017. Rev. Helms was a resident of Lumberton, North Carolina at the time of his passing.
He attended Louisburg College and completed his Bachelors degree at NC Wesleyan College. He received a certificate of completion from Duke University Divinity School.
Rev. Helms retired from the US Navy Submarine Service.
He was married to Carolyn.

JOHNSON, David Allen, 69, of Snohomish, WA, died Friday, February 3, 2017 after a long illness. He was born Sept. 28, 1947. David served 20 years on Navy submarines and retired as a Senior Chief. He loved the Navy and served on three diesels and one nuclear submarine. He also served 20 years with the US Post Office in Everett, WA. He liked to fish, hunt, and go to the ocean. Charles Benjamin Schwartz, 74, lost his yearlong battle to pancreatic cancer on January 19, 2017 at his home in Wesley Chapel, Florida. Born October 4, 1942 in Camden, New Jersey to the late Charles James Schwartz and Mary Wilma Postell. Charlie served his nation for ten years in the US Navy during the 1960s and was a proud Submariner. He served as a Quarter Master (QM1SS) on board several diesel subs (USS Piper 409) and finished his naval career on nuclear sub (SSBN 608). After leaving the Navy he moved to Ipswich, Massachusetts to raise his young family. He spent 36 years as a police officer for the Ipswich Police Department, the last 17 years with the force he was overjoyed to serve as Assistant Harbormaster. Charlie, The Man, as he had loving become known, retired in October 2007 and moved to the west coast of Florida. He soon became a regular fixture at the Country Hound restaurant, where he earned a Counter Trash t-shirt, of which he wore proudly. He only lasted 6 months before he sought out working on the water again, when he found Palm Island Transit (PIT). He served as a Load Master for the ferry service, which transported vehicles and pedestrians across the Intracoastal to a small group of barrier islands. Most recently he had obtained his 100-ton US Coast Guard captains license and drove the water taxi for PIT. This is where his charm and efficiency would, once again, touched lives and gained him many friends, and his new family.

Carl John Berg (SS) December 15, 2016

Carl John Berg, Jr., born Sept. 26, 1936, died Dec. 15, 2016 after a long illness at age 80.

Carl was a creative man and spent his life creating beautiful things professionally as a carpenter and as master cabinet-maker — his favorite thing. He also built toys for his children and grandchildren, and built homes with his son and Joan. For several years, Carl fished commercially off the Washington coast for Chinook salmon and is credited for his heroism in a great storm surge when he risked his own life to rescue a fellow fisherman. From 1956-58, Carl served proudly in the United States Navy on the USS Jallao submarine out of New London. The Jallao was commissioned by the Sixth Fleet and its crew trained the Italian Navy, took part in fleet exercises through the Suez Canal, visited eastern and southern Africa, and crossed the South Atlantic to take part in exercises with Uruguayan and Brazilian destroyers.

SCHWARBERG, Edward Tomlin, 93, was born on November 23, 1923 and passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2016. Edward was a resident of Edgewood, Kentucky at the time of his passing. He proudly served our country in the United States Navy where he fought in a submarine in the Pacific Theater where he was awarded several medals [CSD-22, Swordfish, CSD-45, Jallao]. He was married to Rose Schwarberg.

 Harry “Doc” Culbreath was born December 8, 1923, to the late Ira and Willie Lee (Culbreath) Culbreath, in Saluda, SC, and spent his childhood years in the area known as “the bungalows” which were located in Ivy Rock, (Plymouth) PA. Harry attended Black Horse School and later continued his education in the Norristown Area School District after his family moved to East Norriton in 1937. Yearning to see more of the world, Harry joined the Navy in March 1941. While stationed in Seattle, WA, he met and married Anna E. Trigg. From this union was born two children.

Harry completed the basic training in Norfolk, VA, and spent his first few years assigned to various naval stations and vessels. In April of 1959, after completing a course of study at the U.S. Naval Submarine School, at the U.S. Submarine Base in New London, CT, he broke barriers by being among the first “Negro’s” to acquire the position of “Submariner.” He served on several submarines: USS Jallao (one of the first nuclear subs), USS George Washington, USS Ethan Allen, USS Bang, USS Patrick Henry and ending his assignments with the USS Skate. He was a veteran of the following wars: Korean, World War II, Bay of Pigs and Viet Nam. Harry had a winning personality and loved to tell tales of his family and travels. During his military tenure he received numerous service and good conduct medals. He was popular with the dishes he prepared. The officers and crew members cherished his culinary achievements.

In 1969, he relocated to New London, CT, where he remarried in 1975 to Frances (Webster) Culbreath and remained until his return to Norristown in 2012. Although it was never one of his assignments, one of his highlightes is the fact that the USS Titania was renamed the USS Harry Culbreath. He claimed to have been around the world three times. After 30 years of active and in-active service Harry was retired from the Navy in November of 1973 with the rank of Steward Second Class.

Throughout his years with the Navy and after his discharge he worked at various jobs including the Post Office while in California, Strohmen Bread Company, Norristown State Hospital, and he retired from a machine shop in CT.

Warner D. Young, 85, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, August 21, 2016 at Pine Rock Manor in Warner, NH. He was born on April 27, 1931, son of Will and Lula (Glass) Young of Opelika, Alabama.

He was the husband of the late Patricia (Sotiroupoulos) Young for 47 years. They were married on November 11, 1954 in Ipswich, Massachusetts.

Warner entered the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 as a Seaman Recruit in 1948. He served during the Korean War as well as on several ships, cruisers and had special duties that qualified him for Submarine Service, which included tours on the USS Cubera, and USS Sablefish. He received “Enlisted Instructor of the Year” Award when he taught Navigation at the Fleet Training Center in Newport, Rhode Island. He retired honorably from the Navy as Quarter Master QMCS(SS) in 1969.

After retiring from the Navy, he managed Kingstown Mobile Home Park in Epsom, worked for the State of NH as a Licensing Officer in Concord and his last job was working for Centorr Associates wiring Industrial Furnaces in Allenstown, NH.

Warner was an avid golfer for many years, and loved making golf clubs for many of his friends. He enjoyed striped bass fishing, hunting, working on Volkswagen engines, building model ships, becoming a Tai Chi Master, ballroom dancing, traveling to Alabama for Family Reunions, watching Patriots football and spending time with his family.

Albert R. Mackey, 67, passed away suddenly at his home in Bradenton, FL accompanied by his wife Cindy Mackey. Albert was born in Albany, NY on Feb 2, 1949 to the late Dale and Eleanor (Goodrich) Mackey. He was a graduate of Columbia High School and Hudson Valley Community College, and he served his country in the United States Navy on the USS Hardhead 365 as an Electrician’s Mate. As a young boy he understood the value of hard work and was a paperboy for many years. He worked for Winthrop Laboratories, Ralph Beyer Trucking, and Freihofer’s Bakery before going into business for himself hauling mobile offices. He also worked for Lane Trucking Enterprise. Albert went by many names. He was known in the Navy as Al “Bull” Mackey. Family frequently called him Uncle Al the Kiddies Pal, or just Al for short. Later in life he enjoyed playing Santa Al at the DAV Christmas party for children. He was always a very active man who loved boating, water skiing, golfing, bowling, baseball, and riding his motorcycle. Al was very active with the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), where he served as the Adjutant for 6 years. He drove disabled veterans to and from their doctor appointments and participated in fundraising activities in support of veterans.

BASILIO, Silverio Amos, 89, of Wrightstown, NJ, passed away with his loving family by his side on July 6, 2016 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton. He was born August 8, 1926, in San Antonio, Zambalas, Philippines, to the late Juan and Ines (Amos) Basilio. He enlisted in the United States Navy and honorably served in World War II, the Korean War, the Cuban Missle Crisis and the Vietnam War. During his 22 years of submarine service, Silverio was awarded the Navy Good Conduct Medal. He was very proud to be a US citizen and loved all that the US stood for. After retiring from the Navy, he went to work as a barber which became his lifelong profession and livelihood. He was known for dancing with his beloved wife, Barbara, well into his eighties. Everyone knew Silverio for also being a very talented cook especially for his Filipino cuisine. As a cook in the Navy, he had many memorable stories of cooking for the Officers and staff on the submarines. But most of all, he adored his family up and until his last day. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him. Silverio is predeceased by his parents and 3 siblings. He leaves behind his wife of 61 years Barbara Basilio (Myers)his son, Tony Basilio of Californiahis daughter, Dolores Basilio of Californiahis grandson, Shawn Daoud and his wife Dulceand two great-granddaughters Soroya and Sharlize, all of California.

WADE, Rebert Carlton 91, passed peacefully on July 6th, 2016, in Toledo, OH while holding the hand of his wife and best friend of more than 70 years. Rebert was born in Springfield, OH on August 11, 1924 to Clyde and Laura (Mahan). He graduated from Lawrenceville High School in 1942 where he was a star basketball player. Rebert served in the United States Navy, on the USS Jallao (submarine), and was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. Rebert married his one and only love, Betty (Gearhart), on October 4th, 1945, and had one daughter, Belinda. He owned his own construction company, R.C. Wade Builder, and built many homes in the Springfield area. He was past president of Clark County Home Builders Association and a 60-year member of the Clark Lodge, F&AM. Rebert was a past president of the North Hampton Lions Club and member for over 50 years. He was honored as a prestigious Melvin Jones Fellow, and attended 18 International Lions Conventions. Rebert and Betty enjoyed traveling here and abroad with their daughter and her family. He enjoyed building and spending time at Apple Creek Stables. He will be most remembered for his huge heart, unfailing love, and sense of humor.

Lloyd Carson, GMCS(SS) April 24, 2016

Lloyd was born August 7, 1941 in American Fork, UT to Leslie Lloyd Carson Sr and Charlotte Carson.
Following his graduation from American Fork High School, Lloyd Carson joined the United States Navy and began his naval career by serving aboard the USS Wedderburn (DDG-684). He then went to submarine training school and served aboard submarines USS Jallao (SS 368), USS Francis Scott Key (SSBN 657), USS Nathan Hale (SSBN 623) and the USS Woodrow Wilson (SSBN 624). Lloyd enjoyed a 20 year career, retiring in 1979 as a Quartermaster Senior Chief and settled his family back in American Fork, UT. After spending a short time as a Civil Engineer for Horrocks Engineering, Lloyd went to work for Tooele Army Depot where he worked in explosive ordinance. He retired from Tooele Army Depot 20 years later. Lloyd was a dedicated family man, loved music and dancing and was quite the joker.

PALMER, Leo Ralph, died Wednesday, April 10, 2016. He was born December 16, 1921 to Ralph Bower Palmer and Ethel Mae Nevin Crawford in Anthon, Woodbury, Iowa. He grew up on a farm in Washington, Iowa with two younger brothers, Willard Glenwood and Richard Wayne. A World War II veteran, he joined the Navy in 1941 and served on the submarine USS Sea Cat (SS-399). In 1965, Leo retired from the Navy as a Master Chief Petty Officer and began a successful career with Acacia Mutual Life Insurance. Ballroom dancing was Leo’s avocation. While teaching dance for Arthur Murray, he met Gladys Powell, whom he married November 7, 1947 and with whom he danced for 54 years of marriage. Gladys died November and Leo then married Merrlyn Jackman Hughes October 16, 2004. She died March 6, 2016. He is survived by his adoring children: Linda and Larry (Kim)grandchildren Jeremy (Carrie), Deanne, Matthew, Jesse, and Janelle and great-grandson, Robert.

Peter J. Toppa, Jr., 74, of Voluntown died Sunday morning at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was born in Newport, RI on August 17, 1941, the son of Marie Yvette (Deschamplain) Toppa of Voluntown and the he late Peter J. Toppa, Sr. Peter was owner and operator of Toppa’s Plumbing & Heating for 38 years before retiring. He served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service.

Clifford McMann, Jr., SM3 March 14, 2016

McMANN, Clifford, Jr., 90, a registered professional engineer, passed away on Monday, March 14, 2016. Cliff was born in Grand Rapids, MI on June 27, 1925, the son of the late Clifford Sr and Alice (Seline). His family resided in the small community of Tallmadge on Leonard Rd in Ottawa County just west of Grand Rapids. He served in the US Navy during WWII [in USS Holland (AS-3), CSD-61, CSD-242, CSD-191, and finally] as a Signalman Third Class (SM3c) in the submarine USS Jallao (SS-368). He married Marie Palazzolo on September 2, 1947. Their love affair lasted more than 63 years. He graduated from Michigan Technological University with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1950. He served as the East Grand Rapids City Engineer and Assistant City Manager for 40 years. He was preceded in death by his wonderful wife Marie on February 26, 2011, his sisters and brother-in-law’s Eleanor (Anthony) Pellerito, Helen (Joseph) Garcia, Margaret (John) Pellerito, and infant brother Richard James. He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his daughters Sally (Terry) Howard, Susan (Russel) Hendricks, Michelle (Douglas) Wyn, and Patricia (Robert) Hendryxten grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Sonya (Don) Olds. Cliff will be remembered as a very generous, kind and fair man. He loved spending time with his family, especially Tuesday lunches. He and Marie enjoyed travel and Friday night dates. Those who knew Mac knew he loved golf!

George W. Costantino age 80, loving groom of Patricia A. Costantino, 885 Gungywamp Road, Groton, passed onto unending life on 28 February 2016 at home with family.

As a young man of seventeen, George joined The United States Navy where he served twenty-two years. His service had a great support system–his family. Because of his loving family, he was able to accomplish these years of service to the United States Navy. As a Naval Instructor, he educated others so that they would succeed with their accomplishments. While in the USN, George learned and loved his trade as an electrician. Following his military career, he started Costantino Electric and also worked for the Town of Groton as Electrical Building Inspector for a few years. He loved the greater community involvement and projects that provided opportunity to help or give his expertise. His trade is symbolic to his magnanimous light that will continue to be a blessing.

John J. Christopher (SS) February 22, 2016

John J. Christopher, 72, of Gloucester, husband of Ida M. (McDonald) Christopher, passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 in the Addison Gilbert Hospital. John was born in Gloucester, MA on May 14, 1943. He graduated from Gloucester High School with the Class of 1961. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in August of 1961 serving proudly aboard the USS Jallao Sub 368. When he came home he had worked for the Cape Ann Tool Co., B.F. Goodrich and for the last 40 years was employed at Gloucester Engineering. John also retired as Chief of the Gloucester Auxiliary Police after 35 years of dedicated service. Striped bass fishing and bowling were favorite pastimes of his, as well as his weekly coffee runs with his good friends Richard Anderton and the late Charles Gardner. Not to be forgotten were Ida’s and his monthly trips to Twin River and Foxwoods casinos. Most of all he enjoyed his family get togethers with his children and grandchildren.

John E McCurdy, HMC(SS) January 18, 2016

McCURDY, John, passed away on the evening of January 18, 2016, after 85 years of a very full life.  Mac, a retired Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy, was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1930.  He first came to Florida in 1948 from Great Lakes, Illinois, and later served in Hawaii and Kwajalein and on many submarines and surface crafts throughout his military career, traveling all over the world.  After twenty years of service, he retired from the Navy, and in 1968 moved from Virginia to Florida with his wife and their four children.  In Orlando he worked at Sears as an appliance repairman while attending Jones College in the evenings and earning his BS degree in management.  Mac was an Assistant Scoutmaster and enjoyed hunting, fishing, surfing, and camping with his children.  He retired for the second time after ten years with Sears and moved to Cocoa Beach in 1979.  He was an avid sailor, taking multiple trips to the Bahamas and he continued to surf well into his 70’s.  He owned several motorcycles throughout the years and enjoyed taking trips around the country.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of twenty years, Carol McCurdy and his oldest son, Michael McCurdy.  He is survived by his daughters, Ruth Ziegler and Susan Plauche, his son, Rick McCurdy, his grandchildren, Tiffanie, Chelsi, Hali, Brianna, Daniel, Angela, and Brittany, seven great-grandchildren, and many others who loved him and also called him Papaw-Mac.  At his request, his ashes will be scattered in the Atlantic Ocean with a “burial at sea” ceremony performed on a United States Naval vessel.   The ship will depart from Norfolk, Virginia, the location where Mac met and married the love of his life, Carol, and where they started their family.

James (Jim) E. Northrop June 10, 1925 – December 10, 2015 LEMON GROVE James (Jim) E. Northrop, age 90, passed away on December 10, 2015. May your hearts be shielded from sorrow knowing James’ life was well lived. Jim was born in Oswego, New York on June 10, 1925. He joined the US Navy as a teenager. A patriot, he honorably served thru WWII in the elite “Silent Service,” better known as the Submarine Service. After the war, Jim worked for General Dynamics 38 years as a top notch Electrical Design Engineer. Jim’s “finger prints” may be found on many critical defense programs, including the Tomahawk Cruise Missile. When not at work, Jim was an avid diver, owned his own boat(s), and brought home a bounty of seafood. In 1961 Jim “landed” a record 16 1/4 pound lobster.Qualified in submarines on the USS Queenfish (SS-393) in 1945 and was a EM1(SS) when he left the Navy

Captain Glenn J Secrest, USNR (Ret), 74, of Middletown, Rhode Island, formerly of Minuteman Road in Ridgefield, died suddenly on Friday November 20, 2015 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence Captain Secrest was born on June 27, 1941 in West Haven, Connecticut, the oldest of four children to Adele and James Secrest Raised in Mount Vernon and Valhalla, NY, Captain Secrest attended Our Lady of Victory Parochial School and St John’s Catholic School in White Plains, NY He graduated from Archbishop Stepinac High School in 1959 where he was known by his friends as “Ace” and gained quite a reputation with the nuns In college he changed tack and became known for his studious habit of burning the midnight oil, graduating with honors from The State University of New York Maritime College in 1963 He received his MBA from University of Rhode Island in 1972

Captain Secrest proudly served in the United States Navy in both the active and reserve branches, where he served on destroyers and submarines He retired as a Captain in 1986 He enjoyed a successful business career in the private sector with IBM, Holland America Cruise Lines and National Car Rental He was an adjunct professor of Business at Bryant College in Smithfield, Rhode Island

Upon retirement to Newport, Rhode Island, Glenn followed in the footsteps of his hero Winston Churchill, taking up painting A gifted artist, Glenn was noted for his skill in maritime and nautical art and his depiction of the South Carolina Low Country and the Bahamas; his works were sold to patrons around the country He shared his talents generously, most recently teaching art at the Newport Art Museum He took great joy in life’s more solitary pursuits such as sailing, fly fishing and reading and was well known for his quiet, ordered life

Born October 21, 1945.Qualified in submarines on the USS Jallao (SS-368) in 1963 and was a LT when he left the Navy.   Ronald L. Primeaux, 70, of Gales Ferry passed away on Monday, November 2, 2015 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London. He was born on October 21, 1945 in Lake Charles, LA. Ron was married to the former Geraldine M. ‘Jeri’ Tuplin in 1969. He was a Vietnam veteran of the Navy having served for over 28 years. Ron worked his way up thru the enlisted ranks, and as a Mustang, retired as a Lieutenant.   Following his retirement, he had worked for several years as a power plant manager on Plum Island. Ron was a member of the V.F.W. in Rocky Hill, the Holland Club, Sub Vets, German Club, the Portuguese Club and the Westerly Yacht Club.

Sylvester “Ray” Henderson, Jr. was born August 8, 1937 in Batbush, North Carolina to the late Lillie and Sylvester Henderson. Grade school boyfriend and girlfriend that reunited many years later, Ray is survived by his wife of 26 years, Dorothy Henderson.

At the early age of 13, Ray became interested in baseball that continued throughout his life. At the age of 17, Ray was invited to try out for the White Sox Minor League in Sarasota, Florida.

At the age of 18 in 1955, Ray went into the US Navy which would be the beginning of a career that spanned over 30 years. Ray would retire from the US Navy honorably as an E9, the highest level for an enlisted man.

It was during his time in the Navy that Ray developed his passion and skill for cooking. Ray was known for his culinary efforts and in this day and age where it’s just as easy to go out to eat, he preferred staying at home and cooking himself.

Ray, who was considered a loner, loved the water and also loved to fish. He would spend hours where the solitude of fishing by the water would give him peace.

An avid gardener, Ray was always known for having the best lawn and garden on the block. Often silent and in the background Ray was the strength behind those who knew him.

George Coe, a film, stage and television actor died on July 18 in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 86.  Mr. Coe, whose half-century-long career encompassed roles on Broadwayin movies like “The Stepford Wives,” “French Postcards” and “Kramer vs. Kramer”; and — in a seminal if seldom-remembered achievement — in the original cast of “Saturday Night Live,” also served for more than a decade on the board of the Screen Actors Guild.

George Julian Cohen was born on May 10, 1929, in the Jamaica section of Queens and reared on Long Island. He adopted the surname Coe early in his acting career.

After attending Hofstra College (now Hofstra University), he spent four years as a Navy submariner during the Korean War. Aboard the sub, he did a comedy radio broadcast, fell in love with performing and on his discharge studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

In 1975, Mr. Coe, playing various roles, was seen in the first episode of Season 1 of “Saturday Night Live.” In that episode, and in nearly a dozen subsequent appearances on the show, he served as a conspicuously grown-up counterweight to the youthful anarchy wrought by Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner and their ilk.

Peter Dewitt, age 72, born May 31, 1943, of Jacksboro departed this life on Monday, July 1, 2015 at LaFollette Medical Center. He was a devoted Ham Operator, retired Senior Chief Petty Officer in the Navy after 21 years of service and volunteered for the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 20 years. He was a very loving husband of 35 years that enjoyed getting everybody together and cooking for them for the Holidays.

He is survived by his wife Judy Dewitt of Jacksboro, son Jamie Dewitt of Windsor, VA, Lorie Jarvis of LaFollette, sister Grace Martino Strid of Norfolk, VA, 2 grandchildren and a host of loving family & friends.

Walter I. “Bud” Glassmoyer, III, 67, of Willow Street, PA passed away while vacationing on Monday, April 20, 2015. He was the husband of Dianne (Steinmetz) Glassmoyer and the late Bonnie L. (Sapp) Glassmoyer who passed away in 2010.

Born in Lebanon, PA on March 31, 1948 he was a son of the late Walter I. Jr. and Florence E. (Salkeld) Glassmoyer. Mr. Glassmoyer was a 1966 graduate of Conrad Weiser High School and proudly served in the US Navy. He was a master plumber retiring from Conestoga View Nursing Home. Bud also worked for Gutflesch Plumbing, Armstrong and RCA. Bud along with his wife Dianne were very active members of Lampeter Church of the Brethren where they did many things including feed the homeless every other month on a Thursday. He was an avid fly fisherman and was a master in fly and tying. Bud enjoyed woodcarving, woodworking, painting, cooking, photography, soccer, baseball especially the Yankees and traveling to Alaska, Texas and Florida. He was a volunteer and taught fly tying and fly fishing with Trout Unlimited. Bud was a member of the Washington Masonic Lodge in Quarryville and was the six time and current Grand Master.
Qualified in submarines on the USS James K Polk (SSBN-645) in 1969 and was a TM1(SS) when he left the Navy.

Allison Burton Hayes, Jr, RM3(SS)  April 7, 2015

Allison B. Hayes, age 90, passed away April 7, 2015 in Virginia Beach, VA. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Louise Lively Hayes.

He entered the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill at the age of 16. His education was interrupted by WW II. A. B. joined the U.S. Navy at eighteen. Following boot camp and radio school in Bainbridge, Conn, He went to Sub Mariner School in New London, Conn. He served aboard two submarinesthe USS Sea Devil and the USS Jallao. At the end of the war, he was in the Sea of Japan aboard the Jallao War Patrols 2-3-4. He was honorably discharged in December 1945.

After the war, he returned to UNC and graduated with a BS in Commerce in 1950. He was employed by Royal Silver Mfg Co in Norfolk, VA; then as a cost accountant with U.S. Gypsum. He completed his career in 1984 as a senior field agent with the IRS.

A.B. enjoyed fishing, hunting and raising tomatoes. He traveled extensively throughout the U. S. with his wife and especially enjoyed their Condo overlooking the Chesapeake Bay at Cape Henry Towers, Virginia Beach, VA.

Cold War SubVet Steve “Doc/Critter” Crittenden, 76, of Dunlap, Ill., passed away peacefully Saturday, March 28, 2015. Born April 3, 1938, in Long Beach, Calif., Steve married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Eddy. After graduating from Baldwin Park High School, he joined the Navy, serving his country proudly for 20 years as a medical corpsman, achieving the rank of chief petty officer. Steve served aboard the USS Hornet and entered Vietnam on three separate occasions, earning his Air Crew Wings while providing direct and indirect medical support to Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT), various SEAL Team Units and other Special Forces Divisions. Also, while serving on the USS Hornet, Steve received the White Hat Award for Outstanding Sailor of the year. He then transitioned to the submarine forces and served aboard the USS Jallao and USS Becuna while stationed at the submarine base in Groton, Conn. During that tenure, “Doc” was awarded the Southeastern Connecticut Serviceman-of-the-Month Award from the Groton Chamber of Commerce. After retiring from the Navy, he went to work for Caterpillar Inc., achieving numerous supervisory positions before retiring in 2000 after 24 years of dedicated service.

Jack Edmunds Magee, CAPT  March 7, 2015

Captain Magee, age 89 was a native of Oil City, PA, and was a resident of Norfolk since 1975.

Captain Magee entered the Naval Academy in June of 1945 as an active Midshipman at the age of 19. After graduation in 1949 and commissioned Ensign USN, he reported to the USS G. K. MACKENZIE and was ordered to Pusan, Korea. He entered the Submarine school in July of 1951. Upon graduating from Submarine School, Capt. Magee remained in the submarine community thereafter.

This included command of two submarines, USS CUBERA and USS GRENADIER during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He participated in the commissioning crew of the USS JALLAO and USS BARBEL. Upon completion of command tours, Capt. Magee was assigned to Polaris Operations, Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Command. Then he commanded the USS HECTOR in submarine support in Sasebo, Japan, and made two deployments to Vietnam. Capt. Magee’s remaining years were in submarine support in the office of Chief of Naval Operations and Naval Safety Center as Director of Submarine Safety Directorate, retiring in 1979 after 36 years of Naval service, having been awarded two Bronze Star Medals and The Secretary of the Navy’s Commendation Medal.

William Parmenter THE VILLAGES-William “David” Parmenter, 75, peacefully passed away after a long illness Saturday, January 31, 2015 at the Lane Purcell Hospice House in Sumterville. He was born in St. Louis, MO on December 21, 1939. David actively served aboard six submarines, including Diesel, Fast Attack, and FBM’s, for 28 years. He retired in 1985, then attended Dallas Theological Seminary, Dallas, TX where he was conferred the degree of Master of Theology. He moved to The Villages from Ewa Beach, HI in 1995 and continued to be active in the ministry as a Biblical languages teacher and other outreach ministries.

On January 20, 2015 Heaven gained an angel, our angel James Petralba Sr. He was surrounded by his family and friends that truly loved him.

Jim was born March 23, 1928 to Maximo and Eugenia Petralba. Jim was in the Korean War as a US Navy Submariner [Diodon, Archerfish, Grouper Cavalla, Baracuda, Jallao, Aspro, Rock]. He was a past commander and active member of the Eugene V.F.W Post 293. Jim enjoyed playing his ukulele and singing to everyone, as well as singing with the barbershop quartet. Fixing up his military jeeps was a favorite past time of his. Born March 23, 1928. Retired from the Navy in 1966 as QM1(SS).

Chief Quartermaster William (Bill) Apostolos, 91, a long time Manchester resident, passed away on Jan. 18, 2015. He was born in Providence, RI on Feb. 12, 1923, a son of Nicolas and Agora (Pappoulous) Apostolopolous. He was predeceased by a son Thomas and a wife Mary. Bill attended Franklin Street and Central High School in Manchester. Bill served in the U.S. Navy Submarine service for 27 years and sailed on the submarines Flying Fish, Toro, Burrfish, Shad, Odax, Angler, Jallao, Sea Dog, Haddock, Sea Lion, Conger and Albacore. He served on the Flying Fish during the famed “Hellcats of the Sea” patrols in the Sea of Japan and was on active duty during WWII, the Korean and VietNam wars. After retirement from the Navy Bill managed a furniture factory and also worked at West Side Lumber in Manchester. He was known to many as a smart man with a great sense of humor.

Elmer Dewey Davidson, TM2(SS)  January 4, 2015

Elmer Dewey Davidson 89, a Kirtland-area businessman and owner of Elmer’s Market who quietly helped families in need, died on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015. He was born on Nov. 6, 1925, in Three Point, Ky., and spent his early years in the turbulent coal mining county of Harlan, Ky. Elmer moved to New Mexico in 1930, where his father became a coal mining inspector in the Shiprock area.

Elmer attended Kirtland schools until World War II broke out. Service to his country runs in the family. The descendant of a Revolutionary War soldier who served with George Washington, Elmer enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 in December of 1942 and served in the Pacific on submarines as a torpedo man. On the USS Jallao for War Patrols 4-5-6. He saw much action, once with his sub hiding at the bottom of the ocean while more than 150 depth charges were droped.

After starting his business, he raised seven natural children and then fostered a dozen or more boys in the Kirtland area who were in need of housing and care.
