January 15, 2004,

Following is the text of an e-mail sent to Frank Chandler regarding the disposition of the Jallao.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi, Frank:
How I wish she was still afloat! Unfortunately, the USS Jallao (S-35 Narciso Monturiol) was scuttled after decommissioned. However, the Officer's Chamber has been preserved at the Navy Museum at Cartagena (Spain).
I will check if I have a picture of the Officer's Chamber in its actual location and I will send it to you.
I am in contact with the crew of the USS Bang and I use to publish and contribute with them, affording data about the Spanish Navy period. I have some plans to put in contact the US crews with the Spanish crews in order to share experiences and remembrances.
If you need further details, don't hesitate to contact me.
Best regards.
Jorge
Regards,
Silent Service videos available-------
I’m sending this email to you as a Webmaster for one of our boats, as I am from the USS Sealion SS-315.  My contact with you is in an effort to gain your support in getting the word out regarding the temporary availability of some of our made for TV, “Silent Service” episodes (the originals of which were produced back in the late 50’s & early 60’s by retired Rear Admiral Tommy Dykers).
These stories are not to be confused with later day (modern) features seen on the History Channel, nor A&E.  These (black and white) “Silent Service” episodes have NEVER been rebroadcast nor made available since their original showings on TV.  These are ONLY available through our source and only to our submarine community (not the general public).  In other words; on “no other place on this planet” can you find these available.
If you would “please”  contact your shipmates with the below info, I’m sure that it would be greatly appreciated by all since so many of “we bubbleheads” have been waiting for these episodes to “surface” again (pardon the pun).  Anyone interested should email me for further (payment & availability) details after visiting our (temporary info) website.  Thanks in advance for your support in this endeavor.
For information regarding the episodes and ordering same, please visit our temporary website at;  http://www.donmac.org/clear/SSVT.htm
Shipmates:
Here's the official obituary for Bill Egerton. I just received it from his daughter Becky.  It didn't arrive in time for the All Clear, so I guess it needs to go to all hands (all hands with e-mail, that is). I modified it a bit to add his Navy service.
LITTLETON, NC--Clinton Williams (Bill) Egerton, age 81, died on Friday, 5 September 2003 at his home in Littleton.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, 9 September at Littleton United Methodist Church with the Rev. David P. Haley officiating.  Burial followed at Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Bill was born on 10 April 1922 in Warren County to the late Clinton Williams Egerton, Sr. and Rosa Farrah Egerton.  He was the owner of Egerton Grocery in Littleton.  He was a member of the Littleton United Methodist Church, the Littleton Lions Club, and American Legion Post 308.
An Electrician's Mate Third Class, he served during World War II aboard the submarine USS JALLAO (SS-368).
He is survived by his wife Lorraine H. Egerton of Littleton; a son Clinton Williams Egerton, III of Brevard; two daughters, Becky Egerton Alderman of Brevard and Barbara Egerton Holzworth of Warrenton, VA; three sisters, Trudi Egerton May and Anna Egerton Brown, both of Littleton, and Mary Ellen Egerton Gault of Morganton; and four grandchildren.
Submitted by Jerry Emerson, thanks Jerry.
Roger "Hoot" Gibson has volunteered to publish a quarterly Jallao newsletter  He did a such great job on the newsletter currently posted, see the rag hat labeled "reunion newsletter" on the main page. Let's take advantage of his great writing skills. We would like input from all of you, information on you and your family, pets included, pictures and news, anything you would like to have in the next newsletter. We decided at the May reunion that the purpose of our organization was to be strictly social in nature. A newsletter will help us to stay in touch and be more social. Please contact Hoot with your input at; rogerian@worldnet.att.net
June 6, 2003
We are gathering information in preparation for the next Jallao reunion, we need your input in order the make this reunion as great as the 2003 reunion. There are three open issues that we would like to resolve in the near future, and they are; 1. Where to have it, 2. What year to have it, and 3. What time of year, spring or fall. Right now there is some sentiment for returning to Manitowoc Wisconsin and some sentiment for having it at our old homeport of Groton Connecticut. We also discussed whether to have it in 2004 or 2005. Please e-mail me at silverfoxsteve@msn.com with your preferences on these three issues.
The following Submariners poem was sent in by Don Tetschlag, thanks Don.
"A Submarine"
This is a WWI poem found by a submariner at the Submarine Base Groton, CT in 1966
Author unknown
Born in the shops of the devil
Designed in the brains of a fiend
Filled with acid and oil
And christened "a submarine"
The poets send in their ditties
Of battleships spick and clean
But never a word in their columns
Do you see a submarine?
I’ll try and depict our story
In a very laconic way
Please have patience to listen
Until I have finished my say
We eat where're we can find it
And sleep hanging up on hooks
Conditions under which we’re existing
Are never published in books
Life on these boats is obnoxious
And that is using mild terms
We are never bothered by sickness
There isn’t any room for germs
We are never troubled with varmints
There are things even a cockroach can’t stand
And any self respecting rodent
Quick as possible beats it for land
And that little dollar per dive
We receive to dive out of sight
Is often earned more than double
By charging the batteries at night
And that extra compensation
We receive on boats like these
We never really get at all
It’s spent on soap and dungarees
Machinists get soaked in fuel oil
Electricians in H2SO4
Gunners mates with 600W
And torpedo slush galore
When we come into the Navy Yard
We are looked upon with disgrace
And they make out some new regulations
To fit our particular case
Now all you battleship sailors
When you are feeling disgruntled and mean
Just pack your bag and hammock
And go to "A Submarine"
April 16, 2003.
I am adding two poems today, the first was written by Jerry Reid as a young 19 year old sailor, and sent to me by his bride Punky. Jerry went on to "Eternal Patrol" on the 9th of April 2003.  The second was written by a friend of mine, Stan Crooks, in honor of his niece Kelly who was killed in an accident in May of 2001 and my youngest daughter Jill who was killed in a fire April the 7th 2001. It's been two years since Jill died, and I still cry when I think about her, even as I am doing now. I hope these poems will bring some solace to those who have lost a loved one recently.
To you who've never been and never will be
It's hard to express the feelings of a sailor on a storm tossed sea
With nothing to protect you but a ship of steel
That shakes with each wave and makes you stumble and reel
The sun disappears through a haze in the west
and you're left with a feeling of deserted loneliness
Strange ships sail these waters at night
Only to disappear at the beginning of light
At night they are seen topping a watery ridge
With a skeleton crew and a ghost on the bridge
So for you who've never been and never will be
Have Love and faith for those who go to sea
 © Jerry Reid, 1958, our shipmate
Did You notice...
that pale green
so near white
it's like a newt's belly
is touching the trees
again this spring
it's there again
in the barely visible
shoots of crocus
cracking the earth
and that yellow
you never see
except in a spring
sunrise is back again
it's almost as though
they didn't know you had died
